I don't watch most of them. TDKRs is the only one I'm looking forward to ATM.
It just seems a bit overboard ATM. They are dominating the summer blockbusters. I'd like a little more originality instead of B-list superhero #8. -

It's just another movie trend. Not so long ago it was thrillers and before that horror films. The whole industry goes in cycles.
There are some other movies out there, however, such as Super 8 which looks quite intriguing? -

I don't think that that are too many superhero movies, just like the comics it's a culture that will stay here forever, and with new movie technics, it is a perfct era for this type of movies.

It's me again. Forgot about this topic but happened to stumble on it looking through old posts. Funny to see how things have developed over the last few years. I'll be the first to admit I was waaaaay way off with The Avengers. I didn't say I think it would bomb, just that part of me hoped it did which would put a big dent in the superhero movie genre. Although I'll freely admit I did think it might be a disaster and that the movie would fall apart under the weight of too many big characters. Instead it was a massive success and made the genre stronger than ever.
I actually liked The Avengers. It knew what it was and deliver big screen spectacle and perfect popcorn entertainment.
And I'm looking forward to the new X Men movie. Looks like a fantastic cast at least.
And while not a superhero, I'm super excited about news of The Sandman although it's too early to tell if it will be any good or not.
Overall, I still stand by my view that there are too many superhero movies. I don't hate them, just the quantity and fascination with one particular sub genre. I think like westerns and disaster movies in the past this trend has a limit and it will be reached soon enough. Even in this topic you can see the gradually increase of people over time agreeing that there are too many. -

I'm only 24. I think it's the news of what they are planning to make more than anything that annoys me. There are lists of obscure superheros in the pipeline. They won't all get made but even a few would be too many. I really hope people get tired of them by the end of next year. I'm hoping The Avengers movie is a dud and the fad will die, and we can move onto something else. I hear boardgames are in at the moment. Yippee!

I am a fan of Superheroes but I see your point. Whilst Thor was great and Xmen too, I thought Captain America and Green Lantern were a bit take it or leave it.
I hope Avengers is good but that's because I care bout the franchise.
I would like to see more mature comic book fare translated to the screen, like Preacher, The Sandamn or even antoher pass at Hellblazer(Constantine)
The Ghost rider sequel looks terribad!

I'm excited for these movies! I love superhero movies and the actors in the movies. They're reliably entertaining. But it's nice to see some variety. I saw Trespass with Nicole Kidman and Cam Gigandet. It was a nice break from the superhero movies and a good film in general. http://bitly.com/rnXyjf

, mature comics and graphic novels turned into movies will keep things interesting, at least for a while.

I think why lot of people are tired of superhero movies are that they are blockbuster. Unlike romantic comedies or horror films which are not suppose to be huge movies of the year like superhero movies are. Superhero is sub-genre, so it is like a poster said above about a slasher to horror movies.
Here is another example if every summer there was two or three blockbuster disaster movies for the last ten years, I am sure everybody would be sick of it. Same can be said about superhero movies, there been way too many of them. -

It's because of the demographics of movie watchers. They'll make a ton of whatever people will watch, and comic books must have been at their peak at the time when people who are willing to spend money on movie tickets now were young. Or, more likely than just comics, marvel comics. I never read any comics but I did have almost all of the transformers and watched the cartoon. I also watched the xmen cartoon. Gi Joe also but that was an embarrassment of a movie. I mean, a Wayans brotherreally? If you think about it, there have been superman movies since like the 60s or something. Christopher Reeve was the first rehash superman.
I agree about all the Hulk revisions. That doesn't make any sense. There's a third guy playing Bannon in the Avengers movie too.
There have been way worse trends. -

The problem with the genre is that they're no longer
events
anymore. Batman 1989, Spider-Man, Superman 78, X-Men,
those
were all epic events. Now that we have over four in one summer, it ruins the coolness factor of it all. Superhero films used to be very big events unlike any film that year, now they're just a dime a dozen, with all the critics now beginning to compare each other (not even treating them like a real movie, just a "comic book movie")
That's what I love about Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. He makes them so epic and charged that they feel like a totally different league than the other superhero films released lately. Once upon a time, a simple Spider-Man or X-Men film used to be able to do that, but now they're just pale compared to the sheer denseness of Nolan's films. While other superhero films have become stale, Nolan's have risen above the staleness and truly are epic pieces of filmmaking.
