Why "Summer Movies" are a bad idea

The notion of a "summer movie" I believe originally was a movie designed to appeal to teenagers or children who were out of school for the summer. However, today's youth spend most of their free time online visiting Facebook and Instagram or text messaging their friends. They watch movies on their phones. Because of working mothers, young children are now in summer school or summer camp all summer. The whole notion of a "summer movie" is obsolete. I propose the major studios rethink the idea of a "summer movie" and start making "summer movies" for the plus-45 set. We often work less or take time off in the summer and we have both the money and the inclination to see movies in theaters. Moreover the types of movies we like, although they would require better writers, might be less expensive to produce.

That'd actually be nice for a change. It'd make the summer season less bloated with all these uber-expensive releases that are either sequels or superhero movies. As it is, the most acclaimed movie so far this summer is a movie meant for the +45 crowd: Hell or High Water.
What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals. -

Tiger, here's a rebuttal.
Obviously someone is watching these summer blockbusters, or studious would stop making them.
If you want sophisticated films, go watch one.
There are always indies out, all year long. Do some hunting online and go see one. -

That's just a massive generalization. Young people are the ones more likely to lineup for those Thursday preview showing. Tons of young people go to watch movies in the summer. That's about the only time kids, teenagers, 20+'s have a break from school and college to watch movies whenever they want. For adults, it really shouldn't matter whether it's summer or winter. If you are working, you will still be working during summer. If you are not, you will have the time watch movies whenever you want. But the time of year is less influential to when adults go see movies.
