Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Box Office

Hollywood’s 2025 release slate included several highly anticipated blockbusters — but not all lived up to their financial expectations.
Despite impressive casts, strong branding, and substantial promotional efforts, a number of major films failed to turn a profit. Below are six high‑profile Hollywood flops of 2025, each showcasing how even large-scale investments can fall short at the box office.

    1. Snow White (2025)
Production Budget: Estimated between $240–270 million
Worldwide Box Office: Approximately $204.9 million
Disney’s reimagining of a classic tale failed to break even, marking a rare misstep for the studio. With high production costs and likely additional expenses in marketing, the film’s total gross fell below the profitability threshold. Despite the strong brand recognition, Snow White's performance highlights how costly remakes don’t always guarantee success.
    2. Mickey 17
      Production Budget: Around $118 million
Worldwide Box Office: Around $131 million
While Mickey 17 earned more than its reported budget, it was not enough to cover the full scope of production and marketing expenses. Analysts estimated losses near $75 million, showing that crossing the budget line is not enough — the real break-even point is often significantly higher.
    3. Captain America: Brave New World
Production Budget: Roughly $180 million (excluding marketing)
Worldwide Box Office: Estimated between $413–415 million
Despite solid box office figures, this entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was considered a financial underperformer. Factoring in marketing, distribution, and high expectations, experts estimated the break-even point to be upwards of $425–450 million, making the film’s margin razor-thin or potentially negative.
    4. Ballerina (From the World of John Wick)
      Production Budget: $90 million
Worldwide Box Office: Around $131.8 million
Spun off from the popular John Wick franchise, Ballerina didn’t capitalize as hoped. Though it surpassed its production budget, the gross was insufficient when measured against the full cost structure. Weak multipliers and lukewarm reception contributed to its poor financial return.
    5. Love Hurts
Production Budget: Estimated at $18–20 million
Worldwide Box Office: Approximately $17.6 million
This romantic drama failed to resonate with audiences and did not recover its relatively modest production budget. With marketing and distribution unaccounted for, the film became one of the smaller but clear-cut losses of the year.
    6. The Alto Knights
      Production Budget: Around $45 million
Worldwide Box Office: Just $9.5 million
One of the most dramatic failures of 2025, The Alto Knights earned back only a fraction of its production cost. Despite early buzz, the film failed to find a substantial audience, underlining the unpredictability of theatrical performance, especially for non-franchise titles.

I wouldn't say Brave New World was a flop. It still made a lot of money compared to many superhero movies have recently. It underperformed other Captain America movies but that's not surprising considering Chris Evans wasn't in it.

Captain America will never be a Black Guy so that Anthony Mackie casting is just silly

Saw the Mickey 17 trailer. Looks interesting but odd. Not sure if it's an engaging storyline/plot.
