The historical epic fad passed. They started underperforming at the box office and so Hollywood moved on. I think Alexander is probably what killed it.

The highest grossing film is a historical epic made in like the 60’s. Gone with the wind was another one came out in the 30’s.
Game of thrones is fantasy but it embodies all the qualities of a historical epic and that was the top show around 2016. House of the Dragon is a top show today.
Historical epics aren’t a fad and the success of GOT proves this. However because GOT is not subject to the restrictions of a depiction of a real historical event, they can skirt the restrictions by inserting random black characters like they did with House of Dragon.
That’s why there are fewer historical epics despite the demand being there for them as evidenced by GOT still being the top show today.
      Stop.

Ridley Scott is still making them with Napoleon and a Gladiator sequel. To be considered for a Best Picture Oscar a film needs to meet certain diversity requirements. One requirement is to cast a minority in a lead or significant supporting role, the other three are off-screen requirements about crew, interns, or studio executives. Only two of the requirements need to be met so it is possible to have a non-diverse cast but it might be easier to cast a black Caesar than to have a 30% minority crew or convince your studio to hire a bunch of minority executives.

Cool any details about the plot for gladiator 2??
Black illegitimate son of the legendary Maximus rises to prominence in the coliseum under the name of “The Black Bastard.” Faces off against the brutal white racist degenerate emperor Caligula and kills him in a duel, ushering In an era of the first black emperor of Rome. The empire becomes aware of its racist ways and elevates people of colour to senate

They have only announced an actor to play Lucius, not really any plot details except that it centers around him. A black emperor might be too much but the time span of the movie could coincide with the trans emperor Elagabalus.

Oh so it’s truly a sequel since they’re keeping Lucius.
              Interesting

Black Caesar is literally the name of a black historical figure. He was a pirate.

Great. He’s not actually a Caesar.
Interesting side note, blacks were actually able to attain prominent positions in medieval European society. Especially if you look at the moors / Spain, there would be black generals and priests. But also elsewhere.

It’s not due to wokeness. The reason why epics (historical, fantasy, sci-fi, or whatever) aren’t being made as frequently these days is the same reason westerns stopped being made as frequently in the 80s: a movie in the genre flopped really bad and executives decided to ride the wave of another genre or type of movie.
Heavens Gate pretty much killed the western in the eyes of producers and they opted to focus on blockbusters like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters.
Alexander is thought to have done the same thing for epics (at least as far as I know). And, around the time that movie came out, superhero movies started to hit their stride and so executives decided to focus on making those movies more often.
                    I live. I die. I live again.

There’s truth to this. Historicals cost absurd amounts of money to make and generally are low margin products, meaning they may gross a lot in sales but have high production costs so you don’t net much. And that’s if the movie does well.
If it’s a flop like Alexander.. good luck.
I still think this is just part of the equation. Wokeness permeates all media now. If you have an all white cast because it’s a historical epic set in Europe, you’re gonna get smoked on social media and called a racist. Execs are terrified of the woke backlash.
                      BLM
                      Stop.

I would be surprised if they are not thinking of making a Hamilton movie yet.
Never seen the play, no interest.
If they don't have white slaves, they will on the screen to lessen the blow they did.
And if Ham. owned slaves, was that a detail they left out?

Execs are terrified of the woke backlash.
They might be, but I doubt they think the "woke mob" is as big of a determining factor in what gets made as the average person thinks.
The Little Mermaid movie that's coming out on Memorial Day weekend is going to make a ****ton of money. But that's not going to be because they inexplicably cast a black chick to portray a character from Danish folklore and "everyone in the woke mob was clamoring for a black Ariel". It's going to be because the original animated Little Mermaid movie is such a staple of pop culture around the world that audiences will stupidly pay good money to see what will ultimately be nothing more than a competently made live-action fantasy musical remake by Disney.
The point is, people are dumb. They'll go see any movie as long as it piques their interest. If it has black people playing characters that, by all means, should be white, they'll go see it if it's marketed well and is a competently made movie.
Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one.

But it is. Why even bother inserting woke friendly elements all a sudden? They think that is was consumers want to see; consumers = woke mob in their mind. They want to give them what they want to make money.
