Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Lauren Bacall

    LiberationXO — 12 years ago(April 04, 2014 04:20 PM)

Shortly after Humphrey Bogart's death, she announced her engagement to Frank Sinatra to the press. Sinatra promptly backed out.
    Wow.

My mother-in-law says it was a "studio marriage" and not based on a real relationship. I don't know if that's true but there's her opinion.

        Who's your mother-in-law? Rona Barrett?

I looked it up and found this question and answer:
After Bogie's death your brief engagement to Frank Sinatra ended abruptly. How do you view Sinatra today?
Frank did me a great favor. He saved me from the complete disaster our marriage would have been. But the truth is that he behaved like a complete beep Still, that was over 20 years ago. When I run into him now, we give each other a nice hello.
I am surprised by your surprise of their relationship considering you were vulgar in saying "she was passed around in the Rat Pack" in an earlier post.
Most likely Sinatra was there for her in the horrible months leading up to Bogart's slow and painful death. As a young woman, having to watch your first love die this way she needed support, comfort and to feel alive- all of which Sinatra had to offer during great time of need. As she said it's good they didn't carry on. An affair based on hurried emotional needs certainly won't last for any kind of length, married or not.

I wasn't surprised that they may have had a relationship. My surprise was only at them getting engaged within a couple of months of Bogart's death. I didn't mean to be "vulgar". I just gave my opinion and you can't deny that Hollywood had that rep.

From what I gather about this issue, the whole circumstances are confusing. I think what happened is that Sinatra and Bacall kne2000w each other quite well before Bogart's death, as Frank was a great friend of both, and in effect Bogart created the whole Rat Pack that was later carried on by Sinatra as the leader.
Bogart's illness and death was a drawn out affair, and he continued entertaining, especially people like Spencer Tracy and Kate Hepburn, as well as John Houston, up to nearly his death. Sinatra was around, too.
After his death no doubt with somewhat if not entirely good intentions Frank was consoling the grieving widow. It was not right away, but when it happened he began talking about marriage. Lauren did not accept the proposal, but did not reject it, either. but before it went anywhere another friend of Bacall's had told a gossip columnist about their involvement, and Sinatra got very annoyed by that. Bacall later guessed that having it come out as it did went against the sense of control he sought so hard to have, and that was that.
Lauren felt he treated her badly since he basically ignored her and avoided her, when it wasn't really her fault the news of it came out.
I think that covers it, but the bottom line is they were never formally engaged as far as I understand it.
