Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Audrey Hepburn

Dutch Girl by Robert Matzen which is a bio of Audrey Hepburn came by mail today and I am reading through it like a crack addict. Its so ****ing incredible of the HELL she had to go through living war torn Holland in World War 2.
So it makes me wonder why she never became an symbol of the Dutch esp Netherland's cinema in the way Sophia Loren is the
    MOVIE GODDESS
of Italy or how the Beatles is the most common British band featured on magazines and Disney represents the epitome of Western animation.
Why wasn't she held up as a representation of Dutch cultural achievement in the way Rocky symbolizes the American spirit and one of the iconic heroes of cinema or Pele is the pride of Brazil despite now being pretty average in modern soccer?

Because it's too easy to be only 1/2 Dutch.
      ½ S/N Asian (40%+ Chinese) ½ Norwegian/Danish-Irish Swiss (Amish/PA) German French Dutch? French+Dutch Celtic-Irish English-Irish? 🇮🇹..?

Well I didn't even know she grew up in Holland. She was considered a British actress before coming to America.
So not having built her career in The Netherlands, she is not really considered a Dutch actress.
All the bios list her as a British actress.

The simple fact she worked for the Dutch Resistance against Nazi occupation as a spy and message deliverer is enough to say about how much Audrey identified with her Dutch roots. Is an epic story thats the stuff of legends of how she survived the war (including escaping a narrow attempt of being raped in a military brothel).

Well I did not know that.
But Encyclopedia Britannica lists her as a "Belgian-born British actress"
            https://www.britannica.com/biography/Audrey-Hepburn
And I know the Belgian Flemish are pretty much Dutch. But her link to Holland is not well established.
I'm just explaining why the Netherlands may not claim her.
