What happened when he got attacked in the bar?

I read he got slashed and stabbed pretty badly during a bar rooom brawl a few years ago when filming on location. 'Wikipedia' has it that a local drunk guy instigated the altercation, but it seemed to have become really violent. Anybody know the gist of what happened?
