Looks like somebody voted for Prince of Darkness. Which is fine. I have zero issues with anything he made prior to '90s. Maybe Christine a little, but only because it's not a particularly good adaptation of the novel. But Carpenter in the '70s and '80s may be the longest winning streak by any director.

Believe it or not, I gave Prince of Darkness a '10' while Escape of New York gets '9' from me. Many reasons why for both, but "favorite" has a different meaning for me compared to "best."
Longest winning streak by a director, I'll think about it, but good point there. I was really disappointed when he disappeared after the late 80's, thinking he had more left up his sleeve.

In The Mouth of Madness (1994) for me. Between that releasing and Strange Days (1995) concluding there were tonnes of good movies to see at the cinema
Not that there weren't plenty of great cinema films before and after, but that was a good run and so In The Mouth of Madness tops Carpenter's directorial and music composition list for me
It's the personal touches that you can't add to appreciation of lived experience. That information just isn't transferable but holds a lot of the weight of the situation in a non-objective fashion.
