I'm a very enthusiastic fan of John Carpenter and his films. Personally, I regard him as one of our very best living filmmakers. For me, I consider "Halloween" to be his finest achievement; frightening, suspenseful, flawlessly paced, beautiful minimalist lighting by Dean Cundey, the personable performances by Curtis, Pleasance, and the supporting cast, and Carpenter's brilliant camerawork and staging. For me, it is perhaps, along with Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", Brian De Palma's "Dressed To Kill", and Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho", the finest of all modern horror films.
Some runners up would be (in alphabetical order):
"Escape From New York"
"In The Mouth Of Madness"
"They Live"
"The Thing"
