It's not a parody. It is when the actor plays various versions of the characters that made them popular or critically acclaimed.
A perfect example of this is Nicholas Cage. He wins an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas. After that win, every single one of his roles are variations of Ben Sanderson, sober or intoxicated.
Another example is Al Pacino. He wins an Oscar for Scent of a Woman. The character is beloved. So then every film role afterwards, Pacino plays a version of Lt. Col. Frank Slade.
Another example from Old Hollywood is Cary Grant. The guy gets famous for playing Jimmy Hudson in the 1937 film When You're In Love. So afterwards, Grant plays versions of Jimmy Hudson throughout his entire fcuking career. He is just a one trick pony. Probably the most OVERRATED, OVER CELEBRATED ACTOR IN HISTORY.
Last example, Anthony Hopkins! I adore the guy HOWEVER, Anthony plays the variations of the same character for a very long time now.
Not a parody at all. It's just called "playing it safe".
