I really have to laugh on the odd occassion someone says Craven wasn't a master of horror.
He is the only guy to hit the genre big time twice.
Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream.
John Carpenter only really ever had Halloween.
Tobe Hooper only had Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
He created two huge horror icons, which is more than can be said for other directors of the time.

We don't care about feelings about his movies it's not about the final products it's about his work. He was the greatest horror director with John Carpenter. The way he directed horror movies was far superior to any other director of his time. Compare the directing from SCREAM 1 with SCREAM the tv series and you'll have it. He was a great director.

He's better than John Carpenter, only two John carpenter movies are good, Halloween and the Thing that's all, Craven's movies are much more enjoyable and A nightmare on elm street is probably one of the greatest horror films of all time.

Escape From NY and They Live are both excellent.
Halloween and The Thing are better than Elm St imho. All are classics. -

Finally someone polite, thank you for responding.
First of all, if he had a magnum opus it was Freddie, by far.
Then again Scream was never my thing, i never took that movie seriously or ever understood the hype about it, it being classified as horror really makes me laugh when compared to Aliens.
Scream 3 was a comedy, im not being disrespectful, but it just was, i never had any respect for the scream movies, never saw the 4th, and im not gonna.
Seems like his career just floats around those 2 movies, and he squeezed them into 10.000 sub-standard sequels. -

Even in a post where you quote someone listing a ton of his films, you still only mention NOES and Scream. Undoubtedly, those were career highs that made him a lot of money and FREDDY, FREDDY, with two 2000D's, in particular, put him on the map. To disregard his other work though really is disrespectful, especially at this time. But I can only assume you already know this lol. I can understand you not considering him a "Master of Horror" and that is fine, I respect that but don't try to reason with others who clearly do. "It's okay to be a mediocre director" lol gtfoh.

He was not the world's best director and a lot of studio interference hurt some of his films from being better than they already were, but he definitely contributed to the genre and inspired a lot of people. Without the original Nightmare on Elm St. New Line Cinema would not had been the success it would later become, we probably would not have had The Lord of the Rings trilogy as it is now.

So the OP writes something needlessly insulting about a deceased film-maker, then returns every few hours to defend against the inevitable outcome? Even for IMDB, that is kind of a low.
I think you'll find he's standing on the higher moral ground. -
