I'm going for the movie that still sticks in my mind the most, and it's not a popular choice. It's 'A Perfect World'. Kevin Costner gave an amazingly nuanced performance, and Clint starred and directed as well.
It's about a guy on the run, who acquires a little boy as hostage, but their relationship develops into a real father/son bonding.
It's funny, thrilling, sad, and heartwarming all at once. I was blown away by it. -

but I also like "Play Misty For Me", being something a bit different than the cowboy. I mistakenly thought he might have directed "The Beguiled" which I liked, again, something different, both the movie, but his role.
