I always thought Ralph Fiennes was robbed for Schindler's List… he was ACTING far better than Jones since Jones acts like the gruff but lovable Gerard in movie of his movies… and I have a feeling, Ralph is nothing like the List character in real life, or he'd be in jail… so it was, in fact, the BEST performance…
but the real point is that Tommy Lee Jones was a co-lead, and NOT a supporting role…
most nominated movies have a leading man and a leading woman… if the woman is behind the man, or the man is behind the woman, they are still both nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress…
this movie has no woman… none that last very long…
it's a totally equal film between Ford and Jones… in fact, Jones is in the movie a lot more (the fact he has more dialogue is a no-brainer since Ford is alone)…
anyhow… I think the Academy just wanted him to win… it's like having Tatum O'Neal being nominated (and then winning) Supporting Actress in Paper Moon, which she starred in…
maybe the oldtimesrs in the academy remembered the tv series where Gerard was the supporting character since the title character was totally centered on, and wasn't always on the run…
so I guess they do that sometimes when they want someone to win… either way, Jones was a co-lead in this…
