Glad to see the mist on here, I usually only see horror fans claiming how great it its. Its so so bad, very intriguing premise that is just absolutely destroyed by terrible CGI and also some really horrible writing and casting choices. Seriously you want "Thomas Jane" to be the lead in your movie? When he was pretending to cry at the very end in the car after doing the stupid deed his acting was so embarrassing "ugggggggggggggggggggggggggh aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ooooooooooooo ugggggggggggggggh" I bet the cast and crew felt a bit embarrassed

I had more problems with the overly-religious woman. And the oscar for over-acting of an overly religious actress goes to The other characters' reactions seemed off too; I mean I know the world is full of as* holes, but they all happened to be in that supermarket. Now really?

Overrated: IT. Utter garbage on every level. So badly made on every level, yet, because people saw it as kids & they were scared, that means it is a classic. Just an abomination.
Underrated: The Shining (mini-series). I think this gets a lot of undeserved flack. Steven Weber gives a great performance I think. It is certainly above the likes of IT, but its treated as if its worse. A lot of the hate comes from the fact Kubrick made the film first. Of course, Kubrick's film is a masterpiece, & by far the superior version, but the mini series is still way better than trash like IT.

Considering It is a mini-series I think it's pretty good. By no means Carrie. Must watch The Shining mini-series!

            Overrated: "Pet Sematary" ('89 version)
            Underrated: "Graveyard Shift"

              Overated:
              The Shining - '80:
(Kubrick ruined the essence of King's horror tale with his cold metaphysics and arrogant egoism of what was promised and yet failed to deliver)
              The Dead Zone - '83:
(Excellent central performance from Walken, but the film was too condensed, and in the process the drama and emotion wasn't fleshed out enough from what I consider one of King's best novels)
              Underated:
              Firestarter - '84:
(This film was pretty much the novel in nutshell and boasts good performances, suspense and excellent pyrotechnic effects)
              Dolores Claiborne: - '95:
(The changes the film made in fleshing out Selena's character into a disturbed and troubled woman worked wonders with the main drama of mother and daughter conflict and reconciliation. The central theme of forgiveness is a top tier presentation. Terrific performances with Kathy Bates being sublime)
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Dolores risked everything for her daughter and I'm glad Selena came through for her
Did she block out what her father did to her?

In a sense yes and because she was older, I don't think something like that can be forgotten, but it needed addressing and she just grew up to be an intelligent but diseveled mess.
She also couldn't forgive her mother and blamed her for his death, even after what he was doing to her.
Its sort of like how Tim Robbins character ended up in
                  Mystic River
                  . His soul was broken.

Yes, I think she also felt guilt that her father was killed because of her
Actually, it was because of him alone that he was killed (wasn't it genius!)
Dolores did what she needed to do to escape an evil husband
She tolerated his abuse of her, but there was no way she was going to tolerate what he did to their daughter, not to mention emptying her account
Dolores protected her from witnessing the abuse she was taking so she didn't realize the extent of her mother's suffering
King is a master storyteller! And yes, Bates is a brilliant actor

I agree. I think that after everything that happened with the three of them, it was easier to repress all of those memories and self medicate. Sadly, it wasn't working for her…. it never does.

This is why it is such a great story, because it reveals realistic horrors and psychological sufferings that are exacerbated by evil broken people.
The consequence for Joe was thoroughly deserving although Dolores paid a huge price for it, even though she got away with it from a legal perspective. What a woman Dolores was and the options for her were limited.
Have you read the book? She has 3 children in the novel.

The movie was odd that it was only $1 million dollars that she left to Dolores.
In the book it was many millions that was left to her and we don't find this out till the very end. She donated it to charity, but King is a bit of virtue signaller himself…..
She has 2 sons after Selena. The middle one despises Joe and Dolores is fearful that the younger son was going to be too influenced by Joe due to his gaslighting of him. Joe was a vile and nasty wicked piece of work. I don't think I've hated a character as much as him in a book.

Strathairn is a terrific actor and the first time I saw him was in
                                      Sneakers - '92
with Robert Redford playing a blind dude.
He is a real and in the moment actor and makes what he does seem so effortless. Joe was such a despicable character to play and he did the role justice. He made him pitiful and pathetic, without invoking pity for him which he really didn't deserve.
He was a slimeball extraordinaire and only someone of King's caliber can write characters like this really well and make them appear original as well.
