      Overrated: the SHINING.
DO NOT EVER KILL SCATMAN CROTHERS IN A MOVIE. Even BLOODY MAMA didn’t do that and that movie traumatized me. (Plus his character had the “shining “ so he should have known what was going to happen)
Underrated: ROSE RED. It’s fun to watch without commercials.

        LOL!
Yeah, I actually felt bad for Scatman Crothers's character in "
        THE SHINING
        ".
The poor guy travels all the way from Miami to Denver and then drives a snowcat from Denver to the Hotel and 5 minutes after he finally gets there, Jack Nicholson's character puts an axe into his chest.

It seemed like unnecessary padding for Halloran to go to all that trouble to protect Danny who was shining out to him, only to get offed pretty much as soon as he stepped foot back into the overlook.
Even King did the same to him in the novel. It was a mallet that wasted him in the book.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

It’s been along time since I read.
He was still attacked though if I recall correctly.

"Carrie" is my favorite movie so I will have to say it is under-rated. I love that Danny Peary in his "Alternate Oscars" book said that Sissy deserved the Oscar for her performance.
I enjoy "The Shining", but also realize that is pretentious and overdone. Like I've said before, Shelly Duvall is my favorite part of the movie.

Duvall is the main reason for me to want to watch T
                  he Shining
                  .
Carrie does have a terrific following and would be considered a classic today. Even non-horror fans usually get some enjoyment out of De Palma's Carrie. I wouldn't say it was under-rated, but it perhaps deserves more exposure on the younger gen.
They would balk at some of the cheesy effects and split screen imagery in the prom scene though which I feel has dated this aspect of the film. I guess this could be considered negligible though, because the build up to the crowning with Snell discovering something afoot and the climax once Carrie gets home to her mother redeems the more laughable aspects.

The split screen and the goofy toy effects when the boys are out looking for tuxedos to rent are perhaps miscalculated on DePalma's part and even a little silly, but then one thing that I love about the movie is its freshness and its willingness to try different things. It is not a pretentious film in the least. Or, it is a very accessible film, I think. At least when he was younger, I think it was obvious that De Palma loved making movies.
(I still have not watched "Casualties of War".)
The slow-motion with Sue Snell realizing something afoot could not have been done any better. The editing, the camera work, the sets, the music, et al.

There is much to admire in Carrie and I'd say it is an easy film to relate too for many. A lot of this would be to do with the natural organic representation of high school, its varied character personalities, (casting was a godsend), and watching a shy kid getting abused by a wacked out mother and classmates and being powerless to do anything about it.
Even the school couldn't intervene in Margaret's beliefs and what it was doing to Carrie.
