I rented Moulin Rouge! because it was recommended to me as a "must see" film (the "must see" draw was not for Ewan but for Baz Luhrman's clever, modern update of the musical genre). I saw it, I think, five years after the original theatrical release. I had heard of Ewan McGregor before as an up-and-coming star based on his performance in the indie film, Trainspotting but had not seen it then. A movie about drugged up losers? Ummm, no thanks (my attitude at the time). Musicals, on the other hand, were more my interest.
Popped MR into the DVD player and was taken aback by Ewan's singing and emotional performance. It instantly fell in love with him and the movie (one of my top 10 fave movies of all time). What I love most about Ewan's acting is his ability to display vulnerability without sacrificing his mas111cculinity. Far from being wimp, he exudes strength in being secure in expressing a whole range of feelings. He's also willing to take risks that most Hollywood lead actors wouldn't dare do (the frontal nudity for example). I was hooked and began seeking out all the films he starred in.
In addition to his singing and acting, I love Ewan for his storytelling. His promo interviews are the most fun to watch (especially if the interviewer or one of Ewan's co-stars says/does something funny, interesting). It's usually a mixture of funny anecdotes, thoughtful responses and informative tidbits about the industry. I've never seen him act rude or show disinterest (although I'm sure he gets bored of being asked the same questions repeatedly). He really gets engaged or try to give some substance in his replies. I like it when he's on The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Pure hilarity!! One of my favourite TV interviews is when Ewan was promoting Robots on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (remember the water fight?). Fantastic!!
Sorry for rambling but I can't help it! lol
To answer the OP's question, I 'd say the Ewan love for me began somewhere in 2005/2006.

        Resurrecting an oldish thread
I've loved Ewan since 1997, when I saw him in a A Life Less Ordinary. Oh god, that's 14 years. I was 14 at the time, and he was 26, I think? (Now I'm almost 28. Wow. Time flies.)
I thought he was kinda cute from the trailers, but it wasn't until I started to watch the movie that I realized Ewan was something special. He portrayed his character as being so sweet, it was really surprising to me. I think any other guy would have played the character differently: less benign, less kind, just generally more of a dick. But he didn't, and I was kind of mesmerized by it.
I'm not sure if I'd ever seen an adult character, in an adult movie, be such a good, nice person. Part of that is the character, but like I said, I think any other actor would have brought some swagger to the table, and he didn't. (And it's not like he doesn't have swagger to spare He's just a great enough actor to know when NOT to use it.) I still think he's extremely good at playing that kind of character, a kind of innocent, well-meaning young guy with no personal agenda Which is pretty amazing considering how flirt5b4y he is in real life, and how well he also plays the "lovable cad" kinds of roles (Down with Love, maybe Star Wars, etc).
But anyway, the moment my crush was set in stone was that scene in the second half of Life Less Ordinary when
the angel is making him dig his own grave
and he starts crying. Like seriously, genuinely, non-actory, honest-to-god, ugly-face crying. (He's so great at crying, and I frigging lose it every time he does it. Every. Single. Time.) I was totally in awe.
Basically, without gushing too much Yes, he's handsome, yes, his personality is seriously great. (He seems like so much fun.) But what's awesome is he's actually also a fantastic actor, and his taste in roles is mostly amazing. I've loved so many movies he's been in, and not just because he was in them, but just because they were totally my kind of movies (Life Less Ordinary, Star Wars, Velvet Goldmine, Down with Love, Moulin Rouge, Men Who Stare at Goats I could go on).
So, anyway. I've loved him half my life now. Crazy.

For a looooooooooooooooooong time -see my quote.
It al started with Trainspotting, which is still one of my fave movies.
Ewan is just an amazing actor; I love it when he goes completely hysterical. Just like
          raygungirl
          describes, hahaha.
          And his killer smile; Swoooooonnnn
He played a very fine Obi-Wan Kenobi; I'm a huge SW fan, so I was thrilled to see him play in it. The duel with Anakin in EP 3 was amazing.
I think I love Ewan as long as my husband and I are together, hehehe.

I became interested in Ewan after watching him in Angels and Deamons. There was just something about his performance in that movie that really intrigued me; he just really stood out. I started following his career after that started watching a bunch of his filmsand by the time I got to Moulin Rouge, I was completely sold. I think that Ewan is an amazing actor and has done a wonders with his careerit's easy being a fan of his.
I'm Canadian and damn proud of it!;)

I didn't read through all of the other answers, so I hope I'm actually adding something to this conversation.
I had actually seen a few of Ewan's movies before I fell for him. I know I had seen
                  Trainspotting, Shallow Grave
                  , and (since I loved
                  AbFab
                  )
                  Little Voice
. I knew of him, but I certainly wasn't a fan or anything.
The movie that did it for me, though, was
                  Moulin Rouge!
back in June 2001. This is going to sound so cheesy, but I always had this fantasy about some guy singing
                  Your Song
                  to me.
I was sitting there in the theater with my then-best friend Elizabeth back when we were in our mid-20s, and Ewan starts quoting it. I'm thinking, "Oh, this is funny!" Then, he starts singing and does that little smirk at 1:57 on this video
. That smirk was what did it for me. I turned to Elizabeth and said, "I'm in love!"
I don't think she minded him, either, because we spent the rest of the summer camping out at each other's apartments, eating desserts, and watching Ewan's movies, even the really bad ones like
                  Blue Juice
                  .

Since Shallow Grave. And for some reason whilst watching that I already felt like I knew him as an actor from somewhere, so maybe even before then!
I'm trying to think which role I find him the most attractive in (other than in real life, because he is
                    always
completely sexy on talk shows). Probably The Island I think.

huge fan since 1996 and Trainspotting, followed by Velvet Goldmine, one of the most underrated movies of our time.
he was amazing in Trainspotting, but 111chis acting and singing in Velvet made me hard core fan. I am glad that he only did few movies i dislike, maybe 2 or 3, most of them are great and memorable.
