Can't Carry a Film on Her Own..

Debatable - and I'm not even a huge fan.
Eat Pray Love was just a few years ago and it grossed quite a bit of money - the following for the book was not extensive enough to warrant the receipts the film received, either. The same can be said for a (slightly less) successful Mirror Mirror.
I'd also say August (with more than modest receipts) depended on the star power of Meryl and Julia with respect to a less famous cast; Meryl herself is critically-acclaimed, but not necessarily a huge box-office attraction. Not to mention this boosted her credibility once again with another Oscar nod.
Although not everyone is interested in sappy dramas or romantic comedies, Roberts was known for creating the most entertaining ones in the 90s and early 00s. I'd say the lower box-office returns from recent films has more to do with the lesser quality of the films she's starring in. You can't blame Mother's Day for Julia Roberts or any of the other stars; the quality of the film and the release's timing was enough to detract audiences. It's still doing better than expected, too. -

i disagree with that. she's the only reason people would go see any recent movie she's done. she's done practically all dramas in the new millennium. nobody wants to see her do that. people like her better in romantic comedies.
