Why did her career ended up so badly?

I was thinking that Milla Jovovich, who seemed a "poor man's Brooke" in "Return to the Blue Lagoon" had a much more successful career than Brooke.
I was wondering why Brooke's career went so terribly downwards she looked like the hottest new thing in the early 80's, and yet her career, at some point was like a total failure.
I wonder why?
She had a successful television series, you are aware that over an actors lifetime they're paid residuals every time any project they're in airs on television. Movies don't air as often as reruns of television series, not to mention they also get residuals for appearing as a guest star on a television program when it repeats. I beleive she was also listed as a producer for her series.
Why do people like you insist on believing that unless an actor makes movies that they're not successful?
Tom Selleck made more money doing "Magnum PI" even though he had been offered but was unable to accept the role of Indiana Jones but over the long haul and run of that series he went from actor to producer, and he became very wealthy I seem to recall he bought his co-stars Ferraris.
When Jennifer Aniston was married to brad Pitt she was worth just as much money as he was if not more, she was getting a million dollars per episode in the final seasons of "Friends" and on top of that whatever they got from the syndication deals, overseas distribution and residuals for repeats. Yet her movie career never went where she wanted t to go.
As far as being successful, I would say she was successful when it comes to making money in Hollywood becuase many actors don't ever come close.
I like Ms. Jovovich but she's become known for the "Resident Evil" franchise I can't speak for anyone else but I stopped watching those after the third film. Kind of like the "Rocky" and Rambo" franchises.
I believe Ms. Shields also does stage work from time to time you will have to look up her projects on one of the Broadway and theater sites.
If you look at both actors credits Ms. Shields has actually done more in both film and television than Ms Jovovich. Ms. Shields is credited in 34 films and 34 television series.
Ms. Jovovich is credited in 33 films to date and 5 television series.
Minds that have withered into psychosis are far more terrifying than any character of fiction. -

Re: Milla, "and 5 television series."
You realize that one of those was as a French exchange student in MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, right? She was more attractive to all of Kelly's boyfriends, and stole them all, so Kelly "helped her study", and she was sent back for failing her classes. That was the 'only' time the Bundy's had food - they were paid to keep her She was sooooo young, she was hardly recognizable.
BTW, one of Brooke's early comedy roles was in the just recently available on DVD now, is JUST YOU AND ME KID with George Burns, his friends, including Burle Ives. (Sept 2014, first release on any media, EVER!) Not good, but not bad either, but it seemed to be start of many collaborations with George Burns. -

I wasn't aware of her career ending so badly. With consistent, running roles in many TV series, and staring in at least 3 TV series (Suddenly Susan, Lipstick Jungle, and
Hanna Montana), I'd say she's had a full, and admirable career as an actress in TV; her career has hardly had a bad ending.
Perhaps you intended to say her career in films, ended badly, and there, I'd have to agree. Fortunately, Brooke found her niche in TV, and in comedy, where she has done very well.

Hanna Montana??
(Slaps head and says, worthy of Homer Simpson..) Doh! Forgot! I remember Suddenly Susan and Lipstick Jungle! She also was in the famous 1993 true like stalking film (which got actual very important anti-stalking laws passed!) "I can make you love me" aka "Stalking Laura"(did the Motown people, seeing how the first title was similar to their 1969 Supremes/Temptations crossover, object to the similarity and thus the change in title?) I'd say where Brooke Shields wound up, on comedy TV as of the 1990s, worked out best.

Ah, Brook is now 48, 49? She was a super model in her teens, starred in several successful TV Sitcoms, and countless C & D movies. She maybe a Princeton Graduate but she's far from a Shakespearean stage actress (although, she wasn't bad a Rizzo in "Grease") or dynamic Character actress, with a Yale Drama foundation. But I definitely wouldn't say her career ended up bad, by any means.
And ah you're attempt at being glib, is right on par with Homer Simpson; I'm certainly not laughing. But nice try.

In the only very recently available DVD version of JUST YOU AND ME KID, (first time on ANY "home" media ever, (well except for a few 16mm film copies)), George Burns makes a comment about how people never remember the "magnificent ones".
The mediocre ones (comedians and magicians in his reference) got the vast majority of jobs The magnificent ones only got the few really great jobs, and were forgotten, but the others were everywhere, so they were remembered.
I suspect that is not so entirely true though For instance, can you name 20 movies that Sean Connery was in, from memory alone? That is only about half of his film credits BTW. Surprised?
(Yes, I confess. I bought that DVD and watched it about two weeks ago. There were a few pretty good pieces of wisdom in that movie and a lot of really old jokes.) -

Yea, I didn't know that either. I think she has done very well and let's face it, she may not have wanted to be so famous anymore. We grew up in the same generation and as far as I know she was of the mindset like Jody Foster where she acted and modeled, but then went to college and thought she would go on to do other things. She has been great as far as the parts and roles she has wanted and she is doing what she wants to do without any pressure from her mom. She seems very happy and I say good for her.

Brooke has also established herself as a Broadway actress - starring in the musicals "Grease", "Chicago" , "Cabaret" and "Wonderful Town" as well as many other stage productions.
I prefer fantasy over reality TV - like Fox News. - B.Streisand -

I love her to deathbut her acting's weak. She seems like a perfectly lovely, intelligent and compassionate person, but there's only so far one can get on looks alone. Her voice was also high pitched and breathy, which was limiting.
Later she developed some comedy skills, but more in a "hey I'm a trouper way" than anything actually brilliant.
I still think she's basically the most beautiful woman in the world, though. Utterly exquisite. -

Well, she's certainly still beautiful, but not as beautiful as when she was 16. I think most models don't have acting abilities and Brooke is no exception.
I can't say if Milla is a good actress (I ne16d0ver saw her acting); maybe she was only lucky to marry a director. -

Her mother was good about a lot of things in Brooke's career but a bad judge of projects. If you read the list of films Brooke/Teri turned down it is kind of sad especially when the actresses who wound up doing the roles she might have had were successful in the roles. Of course, if she had done them they may not have been successful.Who can say for certain?

One of the roles, THE BLUE LAGOON specifically, she got over Diane Lane, an "it girl actress" at the time
IMHO, Diane would have been in a 'flop'.
Granted, Brooke's acting was not up to 'contempory professional standards', (or her co-star's acting), but nearly everyone remembers that movie. Even Phoebe Cates was in a very similar film titled PARADISE; desert substituted for the island.
Brooke also got caught up in the "firestorm" over child pornography when she portrayed an "Old New Orleans" child prostitute (at age 12), in PRETTY BABY. That was not exactly a big success, but it was heavily discussed. Right about the same time, she was also in a movie with George Burns, JUST YOU AND ME KID. I honestly do not know if it was not popular, or if it got caught up in that "firestorm", but it was just released in Sept 2014, for the first time on any "home" media, DVD, (unless you count a few 16mm film copies).
As far as Brooke's voice being high in her early films, yep.
So was the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, Kathy Ireland. If you can stand it, try her ALIEN 16d0FROM L.A.. Kathy Ireland learned from that, and worked with coaches to lower her voice, and improve her acting, but her real fame was with Sports Illustrated. I do not know if Brooke's later training helped her, or if she outgrew that high voice, but that is no longer a problem.
And when Brooke had her first child, she apparently suffered serious post partum depression. Does anyone else remember Tom Cruise recommending his Scientology regimine for her, instead of accepted medication? That was a big deal at the time
That took a while for Brooke to overcome/recover, and was just one more obstacle she has actually overcome.
Just sayin' -

Of what I've seen, she's excellent in
The 5th Element
and
The Messenger
. She does a lot of movies I'd never go to, though. So I don't know how she is in all those other ones

You would have had to have seen every beautiful girl and woman who isn't famous,in every city, state and country in the world to claim this. There is no such thing as the most beautiful girl or woman in the whole world. You can claim that she's one of the most beautiful famous women in the world.I think that title belongs to Jaclyn 5b4Smith when she was younger, she had such a naturally perfect gorgeous face!
I'm only 2 months younger than Brooke and although I don't look anything like her,I was always widely considered a strikingly beautiful baby, child and teenager even by many strangers who would come up to my parents and say this, and to me when I was a child and I'm still told I'm still beautiful, but I'm not famous so millions haven't seen me,but if anyone had told me I was the most beautiful girl or woman in the world I would say the same things I said above. -

I disagree that she looks older, (specifically her appearance in THE MIDDLE).
Think "actress", and makeup
Brooke also has kid(s?), and I don't believe Milla does, and that does make a difference. (Just keeping up with kids will make a person stronger, but not 'thin' like they were before) -
