He's reached a point in his career where he can put his name on any piece of mediocrity and it will sell. While he's the most commercially successful director of all time, he's more about style and syrupy sentiment than substance. I would never say that he's a bad director but he's definitely overpraised. Jaws is one of my favorite films of all time and with that film Spielberg is credited with creating the summer blockbuster. Problem is, his style and technique hasn't changed much since Jaws. He's still in summer blockbuster mode- making big Hollywood films that tug at people's heartstrings. I guess my greatest criticism of him is his technique, it never changes. He's kind of a one trick pony at that .

I beg to differ. Spielberg changed his style and the stories he tackled quite drastically in the 90's. He also knew what his origins were and kept to a formula that bore his original stamp in some later productions.
Spielberg may present things that seem familiar, I may not have liked all his films, yet he has an uncanny ability to showcase things, in ways that haven't been seen before.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?
