I do not understand this conversation. How can a Spielberg Movie be overrated. To be overrated it must be one of his best, and one of his best, is simply the best that cinema has to offer, great story, great acting, great visual composition, so how can one of his Movies be overrated. There are many Movies in the lexicon of Hollywood, some of which have won the academy award, that yes i can argue are very overrated. But for Spielberg there is no such thing, unless you have the gall to argue with the best Movie Critics of all time.
As for being underrated -well, that is simply a matter of taste. Not every one of his movies is a classic, and he would be the first to wince when people bring up his duds, it being Spielberg i am sure he went into every project with high hopes, but the magic just didn't happen, whether it be "Hook' or " Always" or a handful of others, some movies just seem to go nowhere, and have none of his usual spark, maybe he began with a lot of passion for these projects and then became bored and lost the inspiration and uniqueness found in most of his movies. but even the biggest fan of Spielberg will say Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" is a dud

When you say Schindler's List is overrated, the conversation ends right there.

I agree with private Ryan being overrated. Great first scene. And end battle. Disagree with some who say Schindler is overrated. I think it's amazing. Didn't like war horse or bridge but not that I hated them, just that I liked them less than other Spielberg movies.
Underrated.(I laughed at Jurassic park being someone's vote. How could it be rated higher??? Really??). I really liked tin tin. I liked always more than most but haven't seen it in a while.
I'll have to give AI another viewing.

Overrated - Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Only saw it once, barely remember it and have little interest in seeing it again.
Underrated - Minority Report. Honestly, this was a near perfect sci-fi thriller, never a dull moment, with realistic depictions of future visuals and a more intense style than a lot of his other blockbusters. To me it had the beauty of Blade Runner and the excitement of Total Recallbut got forgotten in a summer where Spiderman and Attack of the Clones stole the media headlines.

Agree word by word with you.
For me,Minority Report is one my favorites movies of all time. Its a perfect movie to me.Its a little bit better than Blade Runner equally and totally better than Total Recall. Its incredible that for the Academy, Avatar is better than Minority Report.What???.For me,this movie SHOULD BE nominated for best adapted screenplay in 2002.Was a shame, for me.I hope that Ready Player One and Robopocalypse can be the Minorty Report of this dcade.

I agree with both of you.
                    I credit Spielberg's
                    Minority Report
in 2002 as the film that made me truly fall in love with cinema and also recognize what a director truly does in putting a film together in almost every conceivable way.
At least the French fell for it, head over heels. It won the Csar!

                      Duel
is certainly underrated. Anyone who wants to edit films needs to watch and dissect that movie inside and out.
                      Sugarland Express
is like Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry with more heart. I'll never understand why Spielberg fanboys don't mention this more often.
                      I think
                      1941
is ball-bustingly funny. I will never understand why this was such a blemish on his career. I find it as funny as movies like Animal House and Slap Shot.
                      And, I'm sorry, but I don't think
                      Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
was nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's got Indy doin' Indy stuff and even brings back the sexy Marion Ravenwood.
                      His
                      overrated
films, in my opinion, consist of:
                      Temple of Doom
is easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. I will never get the appeal of this movie. I can't even sit through it.
And, this seems to be popular, but
                      Saving Private Ryan
is really NOT a good movie. Sure, it's got some mind-blowing visuals and really gets across that war-is-hell feeling like a documentary, but as a narrative, it's full of cliche characters right out of any WWII movie that refuses to put any effort into characterization: Intellectual young officer, battle-hardened grizzled sergeant, token Jewish guy, smartass guy from Brooklyn, token Italian guy, new guy who doesn't fit in, token country bumpkinAnd the plot is a really uninspired cliche in itself: (read this with the movie trailer guy's voice in your head)"A group of soldiers on a suicide mission behind enemy lines" You've got to be kidding me!!??!! Spielberg did the best he could with an absolute crap script, but at the end of the day, it didn't work for me.
Also, why did he make a kid's movie out of a horror story about man-eating dinosaurs?

                        Most underrated:
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
-Spielberg isn't very fond of it himself but I think it really succeeds in mixing the darkness, slapstick and action, it works as both a thrill ride and a story/film.
                        The Terminal
                        and
                        Munich
                        and especially
                        Catch Me If You Can
                        were also really effective.
                        Most overrated:
                        Minority Report
(the action and effects really felt like forced set pieces) and
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
(way too reliant on star power without much of a strong story and feeling too much like a retread of
                        Raiders
                        ).

While Sean Connery's presence is a big selling point of Last Crusade, his performance and chemistry with Harrison Ford works very well in favor of the story, which is about two estranged men patching up their relationship.
Even if Last Crusade bears some similarities to Raiders - most of which are on a superficial level - the film features enough of its own flavor. The character dynamics, Indy's understanding of the central artifact, tone, mythology, and locations are all different from the original.

most overrated: Catch me if you can. Why. it was based on a true story about a thief.
most underrated: Hook. peter pan really had to grow up and Spielberg had to as always
Honorable mentions: Overrated: The lost world: Jurassic park
                              underrated: The Goonies
