Rocky!!!!! It's my favorite movie of all times!
I also love Cop Land, F.I.S.T., First Blood, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, Creed and Paradise Alley (which is a beautiful little movie and still had a Stallone who actually tried to continue as a dramatic actor before deciding to be an action star).
Sly is most definitely one of the most underrated and underappreciated actors ever. He's not Lawrence Olivier, Dustin Hoffman or freaking Daniel Day-Lewis, that's for sure. However, he IS a great actor on his own merit. His main problem: really, really, really bad choices made over many decades.
I see how people simply forget that he is a three times Academy awards nominee and when he works with the right material, he can be very effective. This is why I don't blame people for not considering him among the greats.
I certainly do consider him among the greats. Among with Dustin Hoffman, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson, he's in my top 5 of my FAVORITE ACTORS (meaning that it's my own subjective opinion and I don't give two ****s about how people might disagree with me or how "objectively" there are tons of better actors).
What does annoy me to such a high level as a person with a college film studies degree and three years of theatre acting classes: people who don't know **** about movies and acting, and try to convince me that he's a bad actor. Sorry but this… Simply makes me want to punch them in the face. You don't personally like him? Fine. Many people don't and I even understand why. But saying that he's "objectively" a bad actor and pretending that you have proof of this? No, sorry, just stfu.
It's also a huge plus that he's definitely among the most inspiring people in the industry. After all the struggles and mistakes, he still always finds a way to get back on his feet. And who doesn't know the story of determination when he had to get Rocky produced AND getting the title role?
Huge respect for this man. However, one thing that doesn't really do him any favor: apparently, for a long time, he used to be a huge dick.
He's reportedly a better person now, but this didn't help his career or reputation unfortunately.
