Terry Gilliam also cast him in Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas as a guy whos "standing around & looking weird" as well as looking for a place to cook.
Are there ANY films in which hes used for some other purpose than standing around and looking weird?

Well, probably "type casting" as Lyle Lovett is a "weird bird" in real life.
HOWEVER an INCREDIBLY talented and GIFTED musician. Have you ever REALLY listened to some of his musicthe "passion" and "soul" and "heart" that comes out of it. Despite if you like/appreciate his genre of musicyou just gotta appreciate watching him bare his soul while singing.
I'm not a huge fan of his "genre", but WOWif you happen to catch him on T.V.-just watchat least the one time I stumbled on him and listened to him for awhile.
I'm "guessing" this is probably why he and Julia Roberts "connected"because (I'm assuming)if he bares in soul in relationships like he does his music, how could you not "love" the guy for that.
I also found it disturbing how he caug5b4ht so much "flack" that people gave their relationship. Always attacking him for his looks as those opposed to the perceived differenceslevel of attractiveness of Julia Roberts.
I hope he did not suffer too many sleepless nights (or hurt heart) because of that. NOBODY deserves that kind of treatment.
By the way, it was "Own Mind", the first song of his I saw Live. BEAUTIFUL song.
"In My Own Mind" (BEAUTIFULeven better Live Track).

Altman often cast folks in smaller roles who weren't actors. Or were only sometimes actors or "day players".
I think he liked Lovett the same way he loved Tom Waits in Short Cuts, because they both seem authentic in their roles in a way that makes us believe it the first time we see them, and in a movie with a multitude of characters, you really need to have a special kind of presence to be able to stick in our minds when we have to see them again in 20 minutes or half an hour or whatever.

Lyle Lovett has acted in four films directed by Robert Altman. Those four are "The Player", "Short Cuts", "Prt--Porter" and "Cookie's Fortune". Lovett also composed the music for "Dr. T & the Women".
