Gosford Park is his best film by far.

Its rather difficult to recommend the best starting point in Altman since - while in their technical & stylistic flourishes theyre very much of a piece - hes dabbled in so many radically different genres. I find Gosford Park relatively boring myself as its very long and contains little "action" (opinion based on only one viewing though) and Im inclined to think many newcomers might agree. Nashville and Short Cuts would be the most characteristic of his work though.

Nashville, Images and California Split. He's more of a art director though but those three should be commercial enough, Images is the most commercial probably. Al5b4so they are all masterpieces, Nashville is his best. If you like surreal and minimalistic films I will recommend Brewster McCloud and 3 Woman.
As for the most liked by the average joe it's MASH (though that one is closer to the bottom IMO, still brilliant though).

What do you mean. Images does more or less exactly the same as most popular horror films and thrillers does today. And it's more or less unaged. Yeah I would say his most commercial, at least plot ways. It's the film I would say is most likely to get popular or at least liked by todays audience.

Hahah lord I don't know what Images you've been watching, that film is pretty widely regarded to be one of Altman's most inacessible and based on my first viewing I'm inclined to agree and say it's not a very great representation of him at his A-game. It's an interesting experiment to be sure, but I'm not entirely sure it works. Cool to check out anyway, but movies like McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, even Thieves Like Us are better examples of Altman's nuanced storytelling. 3 Women, while unconventional, is one of my absolute favorites.
And Buffalo Bill has been unfairly maligned for 30 years.

I think Images is a good movie, and artistically successful, I just don't think it's very "commercial". Compared to "Three Women", maybe it's "commercial".

It's far more commercial than The Long Goodbye, Mash and all the rest. Why? Well, The acting isn't stylized the way he usually does it and the performances are pretty much just the same as you would expect today which is something the younger audience like. Though it has some weird surreal scenes they will view this only as "thrilling factors". Also the plot is incredibly alike what you find in many a modern thrillers and very alike many tv-show plots (in the way it turns, not that anything is close to it but the things that happen structurally like the end twist, etc are very usual for popular modern films.

Well, I have to admit that I've never thought of it that way. Maybe I should give it another look.

3 Women is absolutely unforgettable after you finish seeing it. It's a really outstanding film that blends humour (at times appearing unintentional), surrealism, and a very natural style of acting. I was personally riveted with the film and it's one that you'll want to watch over and over again if you enjoy the above characteristics.

Altman is my #4 director (all-time) - my faves = McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville, 3 Women, M.A.S.H., The Long Goodbye, The Player, California Split, and Thieves Like Us.
