The extensive scarring of sgt Barnes was make-up. Tom has somewhat uneven skin (pockmarks, big pores?) light often forms shadows or shades on his face, maybe that is what gives you the scarred impression. You can take a look at the pics in f.ex Tom Berenger Online

if you want to take a closer peek.

haha they looked so real and badass. i told my friend about his character in platoon the other day and i said something like "yeah he plays a badass role but i guess they gave it to him because the actor already looks badass has all these scars on his face"

A few years ago I was in Las Vegas at Harrah's having dinner and lo and behold we were told a movie scene (Hollywood Sign) was going to be filmed there. The crew told us we could stay as long as we didn't interfere. When Tom Berenger walked in the room, all you could see were his AMAZING eyes! Couldn't tell you if he had any scars because his eyes were riveting! Sigh!

Tom Berenger's lifelike scar for the movie "Platoon" required three hours of makeup work every day of shooting. By the end of production it only took half an hour to apply. Berenger would only wear it when necessary as it ended up hurting his face.
