Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mel Brooks

The whole point of the AFI ceremony is that the speeches have to be said by people close to the recipient. I know that they also need big stars for ratings, but the other thing should be a priority.
I don't mind it when they squeeze in celebs that don't know the recipient because they're just a few (see:
    Katherine Heigl
    vs everyone else when
    Shirley MacLaine
    won). But during
    Brooks
' ceremony, A LOT of the guests didn't know him and/or haven't worked with him. Hell, they even brought talk show hosts who had interviewed him, which seems like they had to fill in time. However, at the place you could see
    Steven Weber
    ,
    Daphne Zuniga
    and
    Amy Yasbeck
. Because they're not A-listers they don't get the chance to say how they feel about him on TV?
    I also noticed
    Teri Garr
    and
    Richard Lewis
    . Why didn't they talk?

Terri Garr, one of my all time favorite comedic actors, has MS and her mobility is limited. That might be why she did not speak at the tribute. Not sure why the others did not speak, maybe that just did not want to??

Oh, I'm gutted, I didn't know that about Terri ("Roll in ze hay!") Garr. I've always loved her performances and screen persona, both in comic roles and more straight ones, like CE3K and Tootsie.
You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
