Woody Allen, Russ Meyer, and the Pythons made great spoofs years ago.

Shaun of the Dead is NOT a spoof. Only its title alludes to Dawn of the Dead. Edgar Wright is a great director, one of my favourites, but he is not a spoof director.

Well, the ZAZ team was good too. I think the thing with Mel was he did jokes but also had a story surrounding the gags. Even a film like Blazing Saddles had that.

Mel Brooks is not the only one. He is one of three filmmakers/filmmaker teams who characterize the spoof genre:

                • Mel Brooks
                • Monty Python
                • ZAZ (apart from their works since 2002)
They brought us great funny movies like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Airplane!", "Spaceballs", "Blazing Saddles", "Hot Shots!", "Life of Brian" and so on!
The "Movie"-films should nev1908er be compared to good spoof movies! The last one who was slightly watchable was "Scary Movie".

Brooks was good but ZAZ shined in 80s and early 90s.
                  Its that man again!!

Shame on you for even mentioning two totally awful spoof movies as examples ;).
I love Mel Br2000ooks's movies, but i must say that Zucker Abrahams Zucker were the masters of spoof. "Airplane", "Police Squad", "Top Secret", "The Naked Gun", "Hot Shots"
The Wayans brothers did some decent spoofs with a couple of the first "Scary Movie." But then there's been some REALLY awful spoofs like "Epic Movie", "Date Movie", "Scary Video", and so on. Unfortunately it seems like the spoof genre is pretty dead nowadays. Atleast when it comes to good ones.

                        Brooks lost his touch with
                        High Anxiety
                        ,
                        Spaceballs
                        was fun but
                        Robin Hood: Men in Tights
                        was an embarrassment.
And your assessment couldn't be wronger, have you seen
                        Airplane!
                        ,
                        The Naked Gun!
, and the funniest of all:
                        Top Secret!
probably the film with biggest laugh-out-loud moments per minute.
                        "Darth Vader is
                        scary and I
                        The God
                        father"

After reading the responses, I am questioning what it means to be a spoof movie. I have never thought of Monty Python movies as spoof movies. I think of spoof movies where the movie is taking a specific genre of movie and exaggerating the c1908liche's. But, if we are casting that wide of a net on the definition of spoof then you have missed the all time classic next to Blazing Saddles and Airplane SPINAL TAP!! By the way, spoof is a funny word if you type/say it enough times.
