Damn he was so excellent in that role!
I'm going to boot camp soon myself, I just hope and pray that there are no DI's that will throw a knife into my hand! I doubt they'd do it to me considering the fact that I'm a girl, but you never know. LOL!
A drill instructor that fits the mold of ANY one of Clancy Brown's characters is something I shudder to think about. Crap, now I'm going to have a nightmare about that!
        Always an active American Gladiator!
        Lance Henriksen is KING!
        RIP MASK!

well, the thing about the boot camp in that movie was how hyper-violent it is compared to our military training.
in the marine corps today (considered the military's most challenging training), a drill instructor may rough you up (you had better not even think about striking him, though) but it's nothing like that in starship troopers - arms don't get broken, hands don't get cut, you "just" get punched and kicked. incapacitating a recruit, no matter how bad the recruit's performance is, is the opposite of the drill instructor's goal. and a drill instructor does not hate those he trains. his job is not to be your buddy, but he's got nothing against you and once you've completed training he's rather likely to be quite proud. i'm not sure how much has ch5b4anged ever since
          full metal jacket
came out, but it's still pretty accurate in its portrayal of marine training (although people like pyle are very, very, very rare and are psychopaths before they join up).
plus, according to a friend, drill instructors are much less likely to smack women.
          so i hoped this helped.

As much as I love that scene ,I would have to say that the one in the book was a lot, lot , lot better. At least the explanation(and context) makes more military sense in the book.

Heinlein always seemed to have a warm spot for sergeants. Sergeant Zim was his tribute to drill instructors everywhere. When I heard Clancy Brown was being cast in that role I really wanted to see what he would do with it. Unfortunately the material they gave him to work with made the character into a caricature and a bad one.
