There are lots of rumors. Everything from he didn't want kids (though he later had a child with Carrie Lowell) to that they are both gay (I don't buy that one).
Personally I think busy lives and careers pulled them apart. She was at the height of her career when she married him and was always traveling and working. I heard that they didn't spent more than 20 days togther total in their Beverly Hills mansion.

My guess is that she grew bored of the relationship. Gere is afterall a practicing Buddhist and never really led an activ7ece life when compared to his younger more energetic bride Cindy.
Someone else also listed that he may have not wanted kids in the end.
