Why "surprisingly brilliant"? She's always been a brilliant actress.

Oh right, I was just wondering. I haven't seen Inland Empire yet but I heard it was an incredibly difficult role for an actress to play, one that would have required much more interpretive creativity and spontaneity than most other films. I guess it will make more sense when I finally see it. Dern sounds excellent in it.

INLAND EMPIRE was a nuanced, versatile performance that showed the wide range of her acting ability

Blue Velvet, by far, performance wise, Inland Empire.

INLAND EMPIRE. Her performance may be the best ever put on screen. The way she just lets so many of the scenes hang and she just exists in them without feeling the need over do it or put something big there that doesn't need to be there. Her reactions are everything you could want from a performance. Lynch and Laura have a great working relationship; they bring the best out of each other.

Citizen Ruth with Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose close behind. Nothing beats her trashy performance in Citizen Ruth.
