GSD's can recognise emotions but they can't recognise that taking pills is harmful act.
As said:
GSDs are good at sensing emotions and intentions of people.
Especially if they've a good bond with them.
And GSDs are known for protecting you, even against your will if necessary.

A psychologist later assumed that it was reading microexpressions (Before they were a thing) and knew when to stop stomping when it got to the right number by reading the person's body language.
Dog's have empathy skills too and can tell when a person's 'energy' changes and tries to take appropriate action to assist them.
This could have been the case with the dog that got locked up and died of starvation

I don't think that would happen with an overdose, the reaction wouldn't be that quick.
I think it's more likely that she went to get some pills from the bathroom because she was feeling unwell and then collapsed. -

The reactions to an overdose can be very quick,
Depending on what and how severe the overdose is.
But the first autopsy reports support your idea (no suicide).
She probably went to the bathroom to get some meds for help.
The pills in the bathroom were said to be an
"unspecified thyroid medication,
the painkiller Tylenol and Diltiazem, a drug used to treat high blood pressure"
.
The toxicology report following their autopsies is still pending though.

Two of their dogs apparently survived because they had access to a dog door.
On February 26, 2025 actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead.
There were reportedly no signs of cause of death on their bodies, and tests for carbon monoxide were negative. Also found dead in the house in Santa Fe, New Mexico was one of the couple's dogs. According to ABC news, an Australian Kelpie mix named
"Zinna"
was found in a carrier a few feet away from Arakawa's body.
But the couple had two other dogs that are still alive.

Betsy Arakawa died first because of a Hantavirus infection.
Gene Hackman died about a week later (heart, Alzheimer).
Kelpie mix
"Zinna"
died from dehydration and starvation.

Dog Zinna likely died from Dehydration and Starvation
"Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were both found dead at their home last month and their deaths were ruled to be due to natural causes. Zinna, who had recently undergone a medical procedure, was found dead in a crate in the bathroom, the same room where Arakawa was also found.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza previously said that Arakawa had picked up Zinna in a crate from a Santa Fe veterinarian on February 9, which could explain why the dog was found inside the encasement. Arakawa is said to have died just two days later, on February 11."
