Is it just me or did no one even care that he died?

He didn't get quite the attention some other celebrities do when they die. I wonder if that has to do with the manner of death. Maybe not, he was just a private person.
You're probably right.
I know it really beep me up when he died but he was my favorite actor and we share a common problem so it hit me hard.

I remember the coverage of Hoffman's death, but I have no idea who the Star Trek guy is, so in my mind, he got more coverage than the Star Trek guy. Sad to say, unless you are some sort of mega-star, like Elvis or Michael Jackson, your death is only one or two news cycles in all media. In the end, your death is only important for a length of time to your closest relatives and friends. And even they move on eventually.

Even Heath Ledger's death had surprisingly huge media coverage and he had a much shorter career (and less Oscars) than Philip. Maybe it's because he was relatively new to showing how great he could really be, where as Philip was consistently great so maybe he stopped surprising people.

Prob because Phil Hartman was tragically and unjustly murdered in his sleep by his demon of a wife.
Hoffman was just a junkie who was bound to relapse
