This is mean, but among the first thoughts I had was "Why could'nt a bad actor have died instead". I hate that he's dead.
It was probably the acting itself that killed him in a way. To loose yourself in a role, must be exhausting, and after a while it must be hard to shake it off and you bring the pain of the character home. It must have been other things too, but to play a deeply disturbed person must leave marks, especially if the anxiety and depression are already present in the persons psyche.

Sorry, that's pretentious and assigning too much to actors. Who says they lose themselves in a role? Them? how chic and artsy. Yeah, and the grips and those who mop the studio floor are not 'exhausted'
How come all those other actors who supposedly lose themselves in a role(when they really don't) don't overdose? He may have been a junkie due to not making it as an actor, due to not making it.
      wow..deep.

You are like the perfect example of a perfect human who has no personality flaws what so ever. incredible. i actually think your morals may be so perfect you must be related to christ. i am SO glad that you honor us all with your words of infinite wisdom on a daily basis. i could not express how simpleminded i feel in comparison to your clearlyb68 superior intellect.
So much so that i think that a new human race should be cloned from your dna and we should have a new utopia named simplemindedsociety - in your honor of course, where you and all the morally infallible clones of you can live forever without distraction from the cretins that inhabit the world around you.
does that sound good to you? because thats the future i one day dream of living in. i realize i will never be able to bitch and moan about actors using drugs as much as you, but i hope one day i can come close.
        thats from the heart yo.

Ok, what about depression then, is that as hard to believe as magic to you?
Are you one of those people who says "why was he sad, buhu poor him, he had everything, with millions on the bank?".
You must have knowledge high above mine, higher moral stands if you can't understand what drives a man to drugs and alcohol.
            Have a nice day.

MAYBE WE DO know depression, and why we're commenting. Clinically depressed may go to a doctor for a better "Medication" than junk. So , boo-hoo for those who choose to medicate with things you don't medicate with.
And most clinically depressed people don't have a nice high-rise with millions in the bank as they suffer and get better. Damn right. Yeah. let's bury our problems and be "driven" to alcohol. That is being too lazy and too proud.

Yes, maybe we do. Some people try all kinds of medication the legal way and it still does not help. Theraphy included with one-two-three-four-five kinds of medica1c84tions in about just as many years, and still no effect to speak of. Then, I tell you, illegal drugs, or alcohol, will seem like a good option.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a great actor, especially in Synecdoche,New York and Capote. People should remember that first of all, to sound a bit more clich, let the work speak for itself.

I'm very well aware of that. However, do we know if Hoffman tried all kinds of legal medications?
But one still doesn't use heroin as a substitute. So, you are asking what other options a person has? Some resort to psychosurgery and shock treatments as a last resort. Also, we are speaking about heroin, a substance that is poison, not alcohol; both are unhealthy, but not nearly in the same league.

To be completely honest, if someone were to give me pure heroin as "medicine" I would'nt say no to it. Some sources I've heard from insist that pure heroin is a lot less dangerous to your body that alcohol. I don't care if it's true or not, but I still understand why people turn to heavier drugs for some kind of relief, no matter the consequences, I would never say that people I've admired through the years are cowards, It does'nt matter if they died of suicide or overdose to me, we all do what we can.
Im glad you're not like some people, who say "let them kill themselves, it's too me a good idea to thin out the number of junkies" - I've heard a lot of people say that, mostly inherent opinions, if I must guess. A music teacher I had actually said he felt sorry for the drunks but not the junkies, even though I was a young man then, I understood that something was wrong with that statement. No judgement from me (he's still the best teacher I've ever had, without a question), but that was incredibly stupid, since addiction is the same no matter what substance. It felt even more true when an old friend of mine died due to drugs recently. I can see no difference between a junkie and "normal" person.

Alcohol is just as bad as heroin if not worse. Again, you sound like a know-it-all moron who really has no idea what the b5b4eep he's even talking about.

I really miss him. Funny, as it was already explained in this board, I didnt knew much about him, but felt so conected with his acting. Yet, I do miss him, like someone of the family, someone I have always looked up for.
                              Really wish things were different.

So many great roles, small ones, big ones, great films, not so great films I typically go to local "art house" theater (the only place to see mainstream movies that don't involve super heroes and other contemporary movie cliches), and it is completely weird not seeing his face in any of the trailers. No more. Very sad.
