Very sad news. He is an actor who I have grown up with, and one who has become a great favourite. He seda0emed to be in everything, and could make even the smallest role memorable. One of the best actors of his generation, and another blessed with a terrific voice.
R.I.P John. All sympathies to his family and friends.
            Alien
is the film he will most likely end up being remembered for, but for me he will always be the insane Emperor Caligula. (
            I,Claudius
, TV series)There are so many strong performances in that series, but Hurt's is one that lingers the most in the memory when you've watched the whole thing. He is terrifying in that, and totally convinces as the madman left to his own devices.
I love him the most in the following.
            10 Rillington Place
(1971)Very moving as the ill-fated Timothy Evans.
            I,Claudius
(TV series)Chilling as the insane Emperor Caligula.
            Second Best
(1994)Hysterical as the wacky uncle of William Hurt's emotionally damaged postmaster.
Love And Death on Long Island
            (1996)A very touching performance.
            The Naked Civil
            Servant and
            An Englishman In New York
(TV Series, 1975 and 2009)John inhabits the role of Quentin Crisp so well.
            Alien
(1979) Delivering one of the most horrific and unforgettable death scenes in film history.
            I also love him in
            The Elephant Man
            and
            Contact
            .
Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly
            .

Even when he was young he was great. Just watch the subtlety of his performance as Richard Rich in A Man For All Seasons. I will miss him tremendously.

This one stings. just found out about Barbara Hale , now John Hurt! Some many memorable performances. May not get a lot of mention but One of my favorites is 'Hellboy'. May he rest in peace.

His favorite performance of mine is from Contact. The way he pla2000ys Hadden, albeit different from the book, was just so memorable. You could feel the power that character had, as he pulled the strings from behind the curtain; it emanated from his performance. So good.
John, you will be sorely missed and will inspire generations of actors to come. Thanks for giving us your best all these years.
