Hi
I agree with you that those other actresses you mention are great, but which movies with Keaton have you seen. There are some in which I think you are right about how Diane Keaton comes across, but look at the range of emotions she can create and show in Something's Gotta Give, Manhattan Murder Mystery and Annie Hall. She is fabulous in The Little Drummer Girl and Reds: just to name a few of my favourites. I also think she was great in the Godfather's and grows as a character although not a lot of space is given to her character so less opportunity. She was brilliant in Crossing Over and On Thin Ice. It comes back to what I said at the top about being able to encapsulate a whole range of emotions and in the movies with truly good scripts creating a believable character. Another movie where her acting ability shines is Marvin's Room. Both she and Meryl create utterly believable characters that one feels for. She also lifted The Family Stone to a different level. Because I Said So wasn't great, but I think that was the script it never truly gave space to a more inspired performance. I also think she has a lot of technique/natural ability to just do the right thing at the right time which can be incredibly funny. -

I think it's a personal choice. Some people like Diane and some don't. Some like Barbra Streisand and some don't. If you check out the different celebraty boards you will find some people who love whoever the board is about and some who say nasty things. She is diverse, bu2000t I think that she is being thought of on a very specific way, and that is causing her to look like she can't really act as well as I have seen her. I have seen her do some amazing movies, like the good mother, but others were just so so. I do thank the first poster for really seeking an answer and not just bashing her though. I keep wondering why people like Woody Allen. I don't get his movies, but others do. that's why he gets to create more of them.
Is it time for my medication or yours?

thanks for repyling i have given your answers a lot of thought and i do agree with wat you've said about personal choice when it comes to movies and actors..
i know i havent seen a lot of her films the films i have seen are as follows: "the godfather part one","because i said so","something's gotta give","first wives club","the family stone","hanging up".
i know that all actresses and actors do both good and bad performances. But in the list of films i have just mentioned i just found diane keating to be just really bad (my opinion only. Yeah maybe the script is wanting her to be really out going and yeah most of the films i have mentioned are comedies and maybe (in my opinon) she just cant do comedy and is prolly better in more serious rols saying this i didnt find her that bad in the godfather, but then again she was only in it for like maybe 10-15 tops.
In "somethings gotta give" when she was crying and bawling her eyes out for like 10min.. that really annoyed me! i know it was prolly the script wanting her to do it. but it was really annoying all the same..! lol
and in "becuase i said so" i think that this wasnt really just her fault but the entire script and movie was rather bad.. i saw this with a freind who loved it!
anywho i am very sorry i have been rabiting on quite a bit and i'm sorry my spelling is realy bad!!
i dont want to be rude or anythin.. just want to know what people think.
Thanks for the second poster for listing me some films that i should prolly watch in order to get a more balanced opinion very appreciated! XD -

I agree. Watch both Manhattan Murder Mystery and Looking for Mr. Goodbarand probably Shoot the Moon. Those three are some of my absolute favorites that really show a totally different side to her acting. I personally think she is truly amazinghowever have not been fans of some of her more recent work. I thought The Family Stone was good, but not wonderful. And Because I Said So was entertaining, but she is written to be incredibly irritatingand boy did she nail that character. I wanted to tell her off about 10 minutes into the movie.

I actually thought she was very good in Annie Hall and the Godfather movies(okay, at least 1 and 2). But I was very dissappointed in her work in the Family Stone. It was really bad acting. Very forced or unnatural. But I also think the story was really predictable and the movie was just plain bad. I am sure I will get alot of crap for this!

I don't think you will get 'a lot of crap for this' since you are entitled to your opinion. I liked a lot of her movies but didn't think that either The Family Stone nor Because I said So were particularly good examples of her great skills and wonderful comidic talent.

I agree t5b4hat sometimes, in a couple of the films of late (The Family Stone and Because I Said So), she sometimes goes into a bit of flighty histrionics. But, I think it's more the script as opposed to her. Some of the aforementioned films are definite must-sees, as well as, without question, "Shoot the Moon". She was ABSOLUTELY SUPERB in this drama. I always call it a modern day "The Pumpkin Eater", my favorite film of all time. Shoot the Moon is so hard to find now, even on VHS. But, I'd love to find it n DVD. She and Albert Finney play an unhappily married coupleand that's all I'll say. It was made in 1980. Why she wasn't nominated for an Osdar and didn't win it, I'll never know.
I love her. And, I think she's wonderful in "Manhattan".she plays such an uptight, upper East Side, intellectual snob.and is hysterical. Check her out in that one as well. In fact, I always thought that she was very close to that personality, for years, and so never liked herfor years. I thought that she was just so stuck upand I couldn't have been further from the truth. I saw her on David Letterman finally, about 15 years ago or so, and was completely taken aback by how shy, awkward, and uncomfortable in her own skin she was. It was strangely charming.she seems much more outspoken and confident now, in her later years. But she just seemed to be so uncomfortable on Letterman's show. -

How did you find Goodbar? She's perfectly cast; so natural and not extraordinary or glossy.
And i will reply to the previous posters, "Baby Boom" is quite brilliant if you don't ask for too much from it. -

Diane Keaton is not a flashy actress is all. She never gives the impression that acting is what she is doing. That said, she is a marvel at really getting to the emotional center of her characters. That scene in "Something's Gotta Give" where she confronts Jack Nicholson on the street is amazing and in "Marvin's Room," the scene where she accepts the fact that she is dying and chooses to focus on the fact the she was loved is heartbreaking. I think Diane Keaton is a stunning actress and a wonderful interview. To the original poster: I would reevalute my opinion of the magnificent Ms. Keaton!

She was OK in
Goodbar
, but she wasn't Theresa as written in the book. I was disappointed by the way this novel was translated to film, particularly in the way they completely rewrote the character of James. -

Sounds like a good summary. Nevertheless, it would be great if her acting ability were challenged and highlighted once again by a more promising script. Neither BISS nor TFS were particularly great as movies that one wants to watch again.
