roddy (who had a very attractive boyfriend, somewhat famous himself) was 'out' to friends, but being the 1960's, was very conservative and objected to 'in your face gay' which sal was living - going through dozens if not 100's of guy's very quickly. roddy often had partys he'd invite sal to who would always arrive with his 'date du jour' and roddy & his BF & guests were always very cordial/friendly/welcoming. roddy & his BF were no angels, don't get me wrong, they were not monogamis with their relationship, but they were discreet when they fooled around with other guys, again, sal was not, in fact sal was famous for bragging about the guy's he messed around with. another thing that irked roddy about sal was that he (sal) wasn't interested sexually in him (roddy) who many times tried to coerse him into a sexual 3way, 4way or even orgys but allegedly sal always declined, opting to take his favorite boy (or group of boys) home or somewhere else for himself, so to answer your original question, they didn't dislike each other, they mingled all the time, but sal wouldn't behave nor would he have sex with roddy and that drove roddy crazy/insane.
this is a little to much and i could go on and on but i'll stop.
