I loved Richard Harris as the original Dumbledore, but was not thrilled with Michael Gambon as Harris' replacement. Anyb

I realize I'm a bit late to the party, but
I totally agree. Richard Harris was a WONDERFUL Dumbledore Just as I had pictured him in my head when I read the books. Gambon left much to be desired. MUCH. He's a great actor over all, but he destroyed the part of Dumbledore, in my opinion.
I had hoped that Peter O'Toole would have been offered and accepted the part, if for no other reason than the long friendship he'd had with Harris Perhaps that's why he didn't, though.

Wikipedia says that PO wanted the part of Dumbledore after RH died but he either couldnt get insured or the producers didnt want to pay it and for WIW, I agree with the other posters; Richard Harris epitomized Dumbledore and although I like Michael Gambon, he isnt Dumbledore to me. I wish they had given PO a chance.

RIP, El Awrence!
I wanted him for Dumbledore, myself.
Today is the first time I've heard of O'Toole having any lengthy health probsbeside his former massive drinking (many times WITH Harris or Burton).

I think so too. He lived a few years after Dumbledore was killed so he could have done that character and then retired. Maybe he was not offered the role. I did not like the bohemian approach Gambon took with the character.
