You are totally correct. It is one of the most touching performances I have ever seen. I remember when it came out, and the reviews he received were unbelieveable. This was a time when independent films were just beginning to get visibility, unlike today where they have acceptance. I remember he did RUSH right after that, and he was clearly the best young American actor. From what I have read, it's not that he doesn't get work so much as he chooses not to accept what's out there.
He absolutely deserved an Oscar for that performance. Roger Ebert has After Dark My Sweet on his top 100 films list. Let's hope Jason decides to work more, and that Hollywood affords him the opportunity to let his genius shine.

        I highly doubt it.

After Dark My Sweet is still my top forgotten gem movie to this day, I can't believe how good this unknown movie is. But then again, I'm partial to Jim Morrison and other noir authors.

in AFTER1c84 DARK MY SWEET he gives one of the great American performances. Faceted, resonant, daring, touching, and masculine in a way NO leading men of today can touch. It is a lost classic.
If it came out today, and had the hype machine behind it, Patric wins an Oscar.

I agree, that first scene where they won't serve him a drink is so weird and so brilliant.

I've always thought that the way he delt with the rape monologue from "Your friends & neighbours" (A very complicated one) was one of the great performances of the 90's

I loved him in Geronimo: An American Legend, but I think he will always be remembered for The Lost Boys, which was great too.
He's still a hottie, not to mention a great actor.

Jason Patric was a great actor in Sleepers and Narc, two very underrated films

One of my favorite movies of all time, in my top 20!!! Saw it by accident, a friend had rented it when we were in the military, told myself, I want to act like that, one day!!!!!

I find Jason's performance in After Dark My Sweet as one of the best acting petrformances of the 1990s. It's right up there with River Phoenix's performance in My Own Private Idaho, which is a big compliment.

I'd say that is one of his better roles.

He is also excellent in a film called "Rush", with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Greg Allman. He plays an undercover narcotics agent who gets a little too involved in the drug scene. I have always thought he deserved more credit for this role, as it is difficult to portray. He did a stellar job in Rush.
