not criticizing him just observation. penn had plenty of movies gross that much worldwide though. penn has respect toward hollywood he dont need that. He never seemed to care about box office anywyas. He aimed for serious actor . which is why he strayed away from roles like his fast times. He does occasinaly take fun roles like gunman. I would say hes had great career he even has deniro like critical success accept he never really had commercial success like deniro. Deniro was had privelrage of having both critical success and commerical success he was bo office draw in his day. penn was never a box office draw but is seen one of the greatest actors of all time much like daniel day lewis .

I think you should read this article to understand Penn's point of view.

If you look at 2015 top 10 domestic grosses: star wars, Jurassic world, avengers, furious 7, hunger games, spectre, is there any Oscar-worthy performance?
Studios keep making franchise movies because they keep making money. I'm not saying they are bad because honestly i do enjoy watching stuff being blown up, but I'm not gonna remember much right after i walk out of the theater. For me, it's like we're trading a long lasting movie experience for a few hours worth of adrenaline rush. -

You're nitpicking and being dismissive because Mystic River made $90 million in the US and $156 million world wide. $90 million for a movie made on a $25 million budget is nothing to sneeze at.
Now we can handle this like gentleman or we can get into some old gangster sh*t -

true. but mystic river success was not due to penn star power. No offense to penn amazing actor but he never brought people to his movies on his name alone. Fyi deniro was box office draw in his days . Box office was different back in the day so some of deniro films that considerd hits back then where seen as modest hits or decent earners now. A list is a title refered to actors who can generated box office hits just by their name. Deniro did that in his prime. Like i said not pointg penn down he is one my favorite just observation. Tax i driver was considerd big box office hit then.28 mill off 1 mill budget cape fear box office hit casino. Meet the parents the first deniro name was in first in the title. Ben stiller only had 1 hit before meet the parent something abour mary. WHile ben name did help no way you can not say deniro did not contribute he acted logner been more hits then ben was still viewed as leading men then.

I think Penn is substantially responsible for Mystic Rivers success. His scenes stand out the most IMO. It just seemed like he took the script and brought it to a higher level. It's now known as a Hollywood /Eastwood classic. Mystic and Fast Times are really what put him On the map. 21 Grams and Tree of Life were impressive too

Yes but he was never a big star in terms of bank ability. Like has he even drawn people to a movie just by being in it. If producer wanted a bankkable actor would they cast him over say depp cruise or pitt

him and jason patric only actors i can think of never had 100 mill gross in usa
Seriously? You're really comparing Sean Penn to Jason Patric,an actor who peaked in the early 90's?
Now we can handle this like gentleman or we can get into some old gangster sh*t -

What is it about box office that bothers you so much? Maybe you should consider the other side of the spectrum too. Look at the 100 million-actors you have in mind and then ask yourself "Ok great, are they one Penn's level?"
I remember an interview with Jennifer Aniston or someone and she said Penn knows everyone, not necessarily the famous ones but the really talented ones. You see the point there?
