According to the Split Image biography, he turned down the Tony Curtis role in the 1959 Marilyn Monroe film SOME LIKE IT HOT as he didn't want to cross dress, as he did a year earlier, in the 1958 film THE MATCHMAKER
One wonders if he did SOME LIKE IT HOT, whether his career would have taken a different path, to bigger films that what he did in the 1960s -

There is one more book out that serves as a biography of Tony Perkins, which is this one:
Anthony Perkins: A Haunted Life by Ronald Bergan with a publication date of 1995 that is 3 years after Tony Perkins death. So, what do you think - this one better. -

No sure what SOME LIKE IT HOT would have done for Perkins. He already appeared in comedies before PSYCHO [including TALL STORY immediately before].
As much as I hate to admit it, it was PSYCHO that caused the misstep in his career. It was a brilliant performance, but it did typecast a brilliant actor. You just never know what's going to happen when you accept a role. Perkins most likely thought "Hitchcock! What could go wrong?"
