I was so pissed off after watching Limbo I could have beated a child!! (kidding) That movie was a total frustrating waste of time and anyone who was responsible for its construction should be taken out back and flogged!!!(not kidding)

The film was called "Limbo" for a reason. I thought the ending was brave and powerful. A welcomed departure from the trite Hollywood conclusions that seem to pervade even so called 'indies' nowadays.

I agree with you, wholeheartedly, filmheadl. Brave and powerful. Sayles has the guts that the mainstream is missing.
A funny thing happened to me when I watched the movie. I saw it on my TV on an extremely hot, muggy day in the summer. (No air-conditioning or fan.) However, when the scenes kept depicting a progressively worse, unrelenting cold, I felt so cold that I had to get a blanket! I'm usually refreshed by a "winter" movie in the summer, but this one nearly froze me. I was really impressed.
Now that's the kind of moviemaking that moves me!

I think that if there's a criticism of the film it's not the ending, which is great, but the shift halfway through from the traditional Sayles-esque slice of life film to a quasi-thriller.
That was my problem with it.

Brilliant film and the ending was exactly as it should be. Look at the title for crying out loud.

Whatever happened to them, they are no longer in limbo.

The ending of Limbo is how it was supposed to be and I loved it. It remained with me all over the years. If the ending would've been different, I wouldn't remember the movie as much as I do now.
The ending was so chillingly scary, hopefull and of doubt it was limbo.

Absolutely. I love that film and I love that ending with a passion. Perfection.

I agree. I watched the film last night. For a moment in that black pause before the credits, I was thinking surely they won't end it here, and when they did I was slightly annoyed, but I quickly got over it and realised that it was a good way to end the film.
I have been thinking about it ever since. I fail to see how a couple of minutes of jubilation as they got onto the plane safely, or a few moments of terror as gunmen open up on them would have made it a better film. Unless you're dumb, I guess.

The ending is the best part of the movie. It was the only way to end it without cheapening everything that came before.
If Sayles had ended the film with the characters' violent deaths, it would seem excessively brutal for this type of film. On the other hand, if the film ended with the characters' triumphant rescue, it would seem too sappy. Leaving the film open-ended is a brilliant move. The final shot is haunting and leaves the viewer in the same agonizing mental state as the protagonists.

Well said Leviathan 6. I remember that when the movie ended, half of the theater was swearing, and the other half was laughing at the brilliance of it.

I agree that it's a gr1c84eat ending. And a frustrating ending. I've re-watched so many times and each time I'm hoping it will end differently. I know, insert joke about idiot here - but it's because the movie sucks me in so I want to know what happens next. I've shared it with so many friends and could use it as a filter for those who need an ending and those who appreciate the brilliance of leaving us in limbo. That said, I really want to meet John Sayles so I can smack him upside the head for making this film 🙂
