I have to admit Spader never did anything for me as an actor 'back in the day' however, now with his role in the Blacklist I would have a hard time thinking of a more formidable actor.
There are a few actors in history that get the compliment along the lines of he/she can say more things/convey more emotion with a look than most actors can in an entire movie or career (pick one) Spader's depiction of Reddington is truly remarkable. In my adult life in my two careers I have run in to some folks similar to Reddington and Spader's portrayal of the amoral, conflicted genius, bad guy is spot on.
And while some are saying that he looked better in the past frankly one of the reasons I didn't like him is he was a soft looking guy. Now he looks the part and has some character.
Anyhow, since I know all of Hollywood waits patiently for me to post on IMDB I will say Spader you've done a good job. And normally my praise is enough to make most actors retire while they are on top I hope you stick around because this is one a truly enjoyable show.
And since I also know stunt coordinators 2000are also looking for my comments/high praise- I will say watch this show for the most part the weapons handling and tactics are pretty good- -

Great comments.
Ive liked him always. Ever since Bad Influence. He played the part so real. I liked how he didn't play like an heart throb. He played aloof but questionably cunning. Which made the ending less predictable. Until Reddington i think he was undervalued for his subtle facial expressions and gestures. He is aware of his body on camera. -

That's funny. That's exactly how I feel/felt about Mickey Rourke. "Back in the day" when he was considered a sex symbol, I thought he was icky. I never got it. When I look back on those movies now, I'm either unimpressed, or turned off, depending on the movie and the character. But starting from about Once Upon a Time in Mexico and lasting at least through Iron Man/The Expendables, I was RAVENOUS for him. I thought he was amazing, and so sexy.
I'm not quite as attracted now, not because of his age, but because of his plastic surgeries, but he still has his moments. I mostly liked him in Ashby.
I liked James both then and now. I thought he was all kinds of adorable "back in the day," and I think he oozes pure sex now that he's older. Plus, he's just SO damned talented, it's a turn on just to watch the brilliant man work.
