I don't know if they're friends but I do know they are very cordial and polite when speaking of each other. That's because Michael did not steal Eric's role. First, the role was originally offered to Michael and he couldn't get released from his tight Family Ties schedule. Second, all Michael was told was that the role was available again and they were going to work around his Family Ties schedule. He never jockeyed for the role or encouraged them to drop Eric. And it has never appeared that Eric believed that or held any of this against Michael.

Fox didn't have to steal the role, Stoltz just didn't work well as Marty, if not Fox, they would have went with someone else because Eric wasn't working.
