She's not playing Eliza Doolittle.Carey Mulligan is. She may or may not create a role for herself, or take one already written in the story line. However, she is most certainly not playing Eliza.
As for her commentsI agree with what she said about Audrey Hepburn. Jesus Christan actor can't comment on another actor's lack of talent? Yes, she's dead. Would it be better for her to say it while she was alive? You think that that would make Hepburn feel betterto have someone to her face say she had very little acting ability? She was ok in Roman Holiday, and lucked out in winning the Oscar. And anyway, Emma was referring to her single performance in My Fair Lady, which I WHOLEHEARTE1c84DLY agree was an appalling part, an appalling characterization, an appalling interpretation by Hepburn. Hepburn was lovely to look at, charming, extremely generousand Emma took none of those qualities from her. She merely commented on Hepburn's acting in "Lady", as well as the whole film itself. She was saying that there is a much darker, more serious story to be told in the way of what Eliza's father did to make money (e.g., sell his daughter to various suitors for money). I think her film is going to take a much darker, FAR, FAR less saccharine toneunless the powers that be want to sweeten up to crap again. I know that her second McPhee story was supposed to be much darker as well, and even had a different title (which plays in Europe.Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang). But of course, Hollywood probably thought that people would either interpret it as a) "the Big Bang Theory"so, they'll lose the idiot Christian/Creationism/Never Believe in Science audience members or b) might sound too violent..as in "bangguns" (it was supposed to refer in general to the time period in which it was set (WWII), and the wars many bombs. I'm looking forward to her interpretation of "My Fair Lady", and hope beyond hope that the nutjob Hollywood suits don't muck it up. -

Hepburn's best achievements: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY, ROMAN HOLIDAYS, STORY OF A NUN, TWO FOR THE ROAD, WAIT UNTIL DARK, SABRINA, ROBIN & MARIAN
I don't despise her perfs in WAR & PEACE and, yes, in MY FAIR LADY (actually I think Hepburn is better than Harrison in the movie; no matter Marni Nixon dubbed her singing or the oscar snub)
of course Thompson has the right to express her opinionbut Hepburn can't act? I really don't think so -

Thank goodness there's at least one voice of reason within these stupid posts! Emma Thompson is entitled to her opinion for Christ's sake. As far as I'm concerned she's considerably more talented than Audrey Hepburn. I like Audrey Hepburn but she wasn't the best in the world and I don't know why people are making so MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING..

Look, you are not writing any textbooks yourself are you? No, you're not. You're entitled to your opinion just as I am. I'm simply stating, Emb68ma Thompson has the right to state her opinion about anything she wants. Whether you agree with it or not, is your business. Give me a cinematic analysis with textbook information that proves YOUR statements are correct. if not, then YOU can shut up. You don't own this board and I can say anything I like just as you can.

I don't see a lot of Hepburn fans coming here actually. There's a handful of people coming here with the same opinions you have on her critique. I have certain director's work who I like and simply because one of them is female I hear all the time 'women can't direct'duh, yes they can direct and have directed and some of their work is quite good. You are entitled to your opinion of course. Good on ya.

Apart from yours, of course, the comments here are insane. So what if Audrey is dead. Yes, she was quite charming, but one can criticize her acting. And again, she was criticizing her in this ONE PART.
To reply to a later post by I believe the OP who was attacking my mention of the original title of the film (The Big Bang), I was stating a FACT.Hollywood wanted to change it from this original title, which is being used everywhere else, to "Nanny McPhee Returns", in part for political reasons, in part because they thought it would sound "too violent", using the word "Bang".
Anyway, I can't believe this conversation has gone on this long. The poor woman says one little thing, and she has to apologize for everything. She later said, on Craig Ferguson a few weeks ago (a GREAT appearance, I might add), about fags being flogged at the Isle of Wight, and that it's still in the rules. MAN did she get in lot of flack for that comment. She actually meant the Isle of Man, she later said, and then got in trouble from them. She had to talk to the mayors/presidents/whatever top political official they have in those areas, and apologize, and emphasized the fact that she was making a JOKE, which apparently many people in this country don't know as well.
I sometimes think it's not worth it for celebrities to make comments about anything, especially in England, with all the backlash they receivebut I'm glad Emma basically just doesn't give a damn, and speaks her mind. -

I don't think she meant to insult Audrey Hepburn. She was just stating her opinion. What I don't understand is why everyone's so sensitive about Audrey Hepburn for all of a sudden. Talent aside and all that, I think most people seem sensitive about it simply because Audrey Hepburn is dead. She wasn't a singer, so the fact that she couldn't sing isn't a lie; however, lots of leading ladies couldn't sing and had stand ins. She was an average actress though likeable. I think Emma jokes a lot in her interviews and she made some off the cuff remarks. Let's face it, the conservative British Press loathes Emma simply for her more liberal politics so they are just dying to get ahold of something in order to bash her.

This is what I think. If Audrey Hepburn was alive she would have been classy enough to say 'she's entitled to her opinion and I think my work proves she's wrong' and go on. I know Emma's not perfect so maybe she spoke out of turn who knows. I just think it's up to you to decide whether you want to continue to see Emma's films or not whether she likes Audrey's work should be irrelevant.

Well said. Emma did not merely give an opinion such as "I am not an Audrey Hepburn fan" or "I never enjoyed her acting" but she stated it in a manner that sounded like she was stating a known fact. She did not say one nice thing about Audrey and came off incredibly arrogant. Emma is talented but she is hardly god's gift to acting and she seems to find herself terribly witty
