i just want to get this out of the wayemma thompson is a very good actress, in the acting school/acting class/acting teacher way
technically proficient actress, can do Shakespeare, Ibsen, Nanny McPhee, and Harry Potter without a breaking a sweat
but in a 100 years who will be more remembered and revered - I'm guessing Miss Audrey Hepburn
Hepburn may not be the best actressbut had more CLASS, STYLE, BEAUTY, and CHARISMA than any half dozen classically trained actresses put together..in other words she has that "IT" factor which people like emma thompson with all their talent don't have

I'm thinking that in her day, Audrey Hepburn wouldn't have denigrated a fellow actress a couple decades after that actress' death
emma thompson can have an opinion about anyoneno disputing thatbut reading the interview there was a tinge of bitterness, anger (and maybe) jealousy behind itit was just mean spirited
ya she's working on a remake and I guess felt the need to bash on an interpretation of pygmallionbut emma thompson's comments says more about her than it does audrey hepburn
if anything it just epitomizes the state of "culture" today
Audrey Hepburn was and is a larger than life icon who after her acting career gave so selflessly to humanitarian projects and will still have fans a hundred years from now

I hadn't read the interview where Emma talked about Audrey Hepburn. I searched it on the Internet after reading your post.
I think Emma (an actress that I really admire) can express her opinion about a colleague (even if the colleague is dead or still alive). Of course, opinions (even negative ones) must be expressed with respect. And I think Emma did it in that way. Personally I agree with her, specially when she said that Audrey Hepburn couldn't act.
Of course Hepburn was and is an icon of beauty and style (I have never found her beautiful, but it is an unimportant point). But being an icon of beauty doesn't make you an actress. Being a great philanthropist, as Hepburn was, doesn't make you an actress.
And you are right, in 100 years Audrey Hepburn will be remembered as a beauty icon but Emma Thompson maybe will be remembered as an actress (a talented one) and writer. That's the huge difference between these two ladies. I admire just one of them (Emma) but both of them have my respect for very different reasons. -

I'm not from England, but I always thought that Cambridge had a great reputation. Then, possibly because I am not from there nor read about various college's reputations on a daily basis, I thought that, perhaps, Cambridge's reputation has severely declined over the years (as your post suggests). So, after reading your post, I looked up Cambridge, and found that it continues to excel as one of the world's le238ading research institutions, and produces more PhD's than any other university worldwide. It ranks anywhere from first to about sixth in the world, depending on which studies/rankings are cited. Therefore, even if she is from a middle-class background, you're knocking her for going to Cambridge? What is your problem?

The economic class you were born in and your education don't have to do with whether or not you have class!
If you badmouth a well-behaved and selfless humanitarian after her death, you are CLASSLESS!!!! NO MATTER WHAT.
Audrey could have been as poor as a field mouse with little education, but it wouldn't have mattered. Her behavior throughout her whole life showed that SHE HAD CLASS. -

That's neither here nor there. Elizabeth Taylor openly had affairs. Julie Andrews had one with Blake Edwards near the end of her first marriage. They later married and stayed together until Blake died. Plenty of male stars had them, too. William Holden and Richard Burton were infamous for them. Or are you just judging Audrey because she's a woman?
Anyway, Audrey did have an affair with Albert Finney, but it was near the end of her unhappy marriage with Mel Ferrer. Mel was known for having had affairs long before she did and was widely considered to be unlikable. He was controlling and competitive with Audrey (although he later denied that). Most people who knew Audrey liked her, but they could barely tolerate her husband.
As for her second husband, Andrea Dotti, Audrey was said to have an affair with Ben Gazzara near the end of their marriage. Andrea was nicer than Mel, but he was also a shameless, openly-womanizing playboy. Audrey was nice enough to stay with him for over a decade and constantly give him the benefit of the doubt.
Considering the two husbands she had, can you blame Audrey for that? Serves them right.
