Two things happened: She broke her nose in 1991 and her face has never looked the same since. Then in 1993 she started suffering from reumatoid arthritis. This condition causes chronic pain, so she must take steroids to feel ok. (This caused her to bulk up alot.)

Her arthritis was so bad, it almost put her in a wheelchair for the rest of her LIFE! She suffered from alcoholism to deal with the pain, and took medications including steroids to be able to resume a fairly normal life. All that took a tremendous toll on her body. She may be "different" now, but at least she is walking and acting again.
When she did Body Heat, and became a sex symbol, she could have easily become a stuck up star, but from what I have seen in many of her other films, and interviews she has always had a great personality One so great, that even in her recent films, she tackles her current appearance head on and basically allows herself to be made fun of
In Marley & Me, she plays a dog trainer, (with the typical "Alpha Male" personality that matches her current physique and voice) which Marley challenges by knocking her down and humping her leg.
In Dumb & Dumber TO, her character is something like 20 year older, and Harry & Lloyd are shocked that she is no longer a hottie, and is made fun of by them (like every idiot on this message board)

I agree 100%. I too can't wait to see what they look like when
they get older.
I am almost 50 myself, and it makes me sick how MEAN
people can be to women who are older, especially celebrities.
People need to remember: Beauty is only skin deep,
ugly is to the bone.
when I see people making mean comments on somebody's looks,
it just makes me think they are insecure, and not good looking
themselves.
Personally, I have never felt the need to put other women down
because of how they look.

It warms my heart to see people like you who don't feel the need to
put people down because they may not have aged as well as others.
I am so sick and tired of seeing people say just mean and vicious
things about peoples looks, it is just become so ugly
I TRY not to put people down for how they look They are actors
and actresses they are NOT only there to turn us on.
and fact is, it is just bad manners to make horrible comments
on how a person looks.
What ever happened to, If you don't have nothing nice to say about someone,
don't say anything at all.
People seem to think that it is OK to come to a public forum
and put other people down. That is just messed up in my opinion.
If they are a bad actor or actress, or if they say something
that is comment worthy, then OK BUT, there is never a need
to put people down because of how they look.
That is someones mom, sister, daughter, wife, grandmother.. etc.. etc.. etc..
NOBODY likes to see mean things written about themselves or
people they love.
I bet these people putting her down are NOT so hot looking to begin with,
and I bet they would NOT like it if people were doing this to a
loved one of theirs.
Quite frankly, when I see people saying mean things about
a celebrities looks, it just makes me think that person is just insecure
and MOST likely, not very good looking.
People seems to have forgotten the golden rule.
They need to remember, Beauty is only skin deep,
UGLY is to the bone.
In my opinion, I think she looks GREAT. and really, who cares what she looks like.
There are a LOT of men in Hollywood who are NOT good looking at all,
but, society is not as hard on men, as they are on women.
Women are expected to always be perfect looking and expect
that when they are 50, that they look 25.
I am not big on feminist arguments, BUT, it is to a point
where it is ridiculous and terribly unfair to women
who are actors.
