Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Kathleen Turner

    allthumbs-3 — 15 years ago(February 19, 2011 10:22 AM)

She seems to speak with a slight German or Dutch accent. The IMDbbio doesn't mention being raised outside the US. Anyone know where it comes from ?

It's not REALLY phoney she lowers her register due to her acting teacher in college telling her to. So although it's not her natural speaking voice it is hers.

This question is exactly why I came to her page. If it is a phony accent, she really screwed up a few of her roles when she slipped into this accent that her character should not have had (i.e. Peggy Sue Got Married).

No, she has lived in Canada, Venezuela, Missouri, Cuba and England for different amounts of time while growing u5b4p, hense the slight mix of accents she seems to have.
It sounds as though she has a slight spanish sound as well as european added to american. I thought she sounded really sexy and exotic when she was young.

But you don't think she has a sexy voice now?! I get so tired of youth worshippers where people, particularly women are not allowed to age or progress.

Yeah or that she actually takes acting seriously and knows she must have a strong accent for both acting on stage and being a teacher, which she is.
Yes she does want to sound glorious and sophisticated, why not? She has made a career playing femme fatals and strong and tempestuous women why not have a powerful persona? It is all part of who she is as an actress, very dramatic.

See I don't agree with that. She is a very well trained actress who has played an abundance of characters during her career, how could you possibly say she behaves as any one of her characters? More to the point, unless you you really know her in real life how can you say she is 'playing up a role' in interviews. Which by the way, is what exactly?
To me she seems unchanged as far as her personality, there is a video interview of her back in the 80's and she still has a poised and articulate way of speaking, just 5b4as now, she's just a trained actress. Unless you are talking of one video interview in particular?
Kathleen to me is the type of actress who does not just get the script, read it, act her scenes and just go home. She actually takes on every experience with her on each film and allows it to let her grow as an actress.

Kathleen does not ever want to be put in a box. She's versatile. Sure she's played femme fatals but she's also played golddigging murderesses and innocent naive girls as well.
Are you suggesting that she tries to be a muderer in real life as well?
I for a long time wondered what her accent was a mix of, until I realised she was american with a slight brazil touch. Makes sense, all I know is from what it says on wikipeida:
As a girl, Turner lived in Canada, Venezuela, and England, and she was living in Cuba at the time that Fidel Castro took over the government.
I think you can hear a bit of european or spanish or whatever because in Venezuela they speak with a spanish/ brazillain accent. She obviously stayed there a long time.
I think her voice sounds different to when she was young, it sounds tougher, more 'New York' to me. It is definitely interesting to listen to, but I resent people making statements about her as if they know her.
Comments such as 'she's a phony' 'she's putting on an act' etc. Fair enough to you if you don't believe her accent is 'real' or whatever, but to say statements like she is being someone else is ridiculous. Since you have no point of reference in terms of what she isn't.

Okay thanks. At least you have answered politely which is a rare thing to see on these Imdb boards alot of the time.
Maybe we both misunderstood. I didn't understand what you meant in 'phony', you didn't understand what I meant in saying she wasn't. Kathleen does love attention, of course she does. On top of that of course she wants to sound glorious and sophisticated, she has gone on tape saying that she did alot during her training of an actress to make her voice sound like that. Is it phony? I don't know, maybe, to me the mark of a real voice or character voice is what they sound like in real life. Kathleen sounds the same in real life. I have watched videos of her giving advice to students for an hour and she speaks the same. It's just a mixture of accents, which by the way, is not all that uncommon.
I understand if you believe she is putting it on, but I also do not understand what you believe she would exactly get out of that? She has also done many interviews on her voice, explaining her voice has both helped and hurt her career in many ways. It's alot like many other actors with famous voices, take James Earl Jones for instance.
As I said, I too was not sure where that accent came from, but it is spanish sounding. It does not sound too unreal to my ears because I would imagine it's a mixture of spanish and american. I too, have no intention of arguing trying to prove anyone wrong.
It just suprises me when someone makes out an actor is being false when they have been trough alot, are not exactly 'A list' anymore and at her age would have no real reason to want or need anymore attention.

Well her voice (and her) came to my attention when she played Jessica Rabbit. She sounded so unique and older sounding for an animated female character. I looked into her more and found her to be a versatile and charming actress. I just personally believe she is who she is.
But fake or not, I would KILL to sound like James Earl Jones. I would do a heck of alot of training if I could sound like him!!
