I don't see how this is a bad thing, I like watching him in the films he stars and they weren't bad (from the ones I've seen) so it's fine by me.
Jason Bateman plays the same character in all the films he's in but is it bad? No. Others do it too, sure meaning more doesn't make it right but you're too judgemental you know. -

There are very few really wide ranging actors.
Sean Penn (he is nearly schizophrenic) , Ben Kingsley, Philip Hoffman (RIP), Peter Sellers those I believe to be that kind of actor there has to be some level of mental illness that allows them to be someone other than themselves when they go into character.
I've read that when DiCaprio made 'The Aviator' he started to have OCD himself he was so deep into the character. I'd put him on my short list also.
