Gene only b68made 22 feature films, not many when you think of contemporaries like Woody Allen. He chose his film projects carefully, and said he never regretted turning anything down. He also had many interests outside of film that his wealth and fame allowed him to enjoy, such as travel, tennis, and cooking. If you add the four TV movies he made, that brings his total filmography to 26, still small.
His last feature was in 1991 - he was 58 and still could have continued acting but he preferred to spend time with his wife, whom he adored, and live a quiet New England life in his study writing.

Exactly right, plus he didn't like the type of films that are made today, I remember 3 years ago he said it's not that he would never act again, but that it would've had to be great. He also said he would get about 50 scripts a year and that only about 3 of them would be good. I gotta agree w111cith him, there's still great films today, but movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory no. Same thing for Jack Nicholson.

His character Larry Carter says he's done with acting in The Lady In Question which he wrote. I think he may have been saying that for himself at that time as he wound down his acting career.
