Are people just so desperate to have an icon they can't wait for a body of work, or a lifetime of achievement?
I totally think all 3 have their attributes. But it seems like their films bring out this overwhelming desire to fly the flag as high as possible whenever possible.
Scorsese earned it.
Spielberg earned it.
The Coens earned it.
Tarintino is earning it.
But the new crop of promising careers: JJ, Wheeton, and the post mentioned; it doesn't seem legit to praise current work and future projects in such high regard.
It's like HIPSTER film viewers. -

So had Darren and Nolan. Dude is loony toons. Filmmakers like them are indeed icons to our generation for being unafraid to be original. Nolan is very Hollywood but at least brings his own style to the blockbuster genre and is a great director

While I agree they are talented they are far from icons. Darren's last film was true garbage. PTA has a great ability to latch onto talent but his films lack popularity because he caters to a group who want to appear on a huge plane. While I believe there is a lot to appreciate in his films they are not as awe inspiring as some who have him hyped up to be.

You mean Anderson? The director who lifted his Boogie Nights playbook entirely from Scorsese's Goodfellas?
The director who lifted Magnolia from Altman's Short Cuts?
The filmmaker who can't write a compelling story or dimensional characters to save his life but gets praise simply for cribbing Kubrick's penchant for point perspective in his framing?
Only a generation that is ignorant of the films from previous generations could ever mistake Anderson as being "original".
The fact that people are tired of remakes and sequels is no reason to praise mediocrity simply because it doesn't fall in to those categories. Better to watch the masterworks of the previous generation until a truly original voice comes along (assuming that is even possible any more in film - a medium that may have already reached the limits of its artistic potential).
The current generation of film students love Anderson simply because he reflects their own shallowness - having nothing substantive to say about the outside world other than a love of filmmaking. And if a fraud like him can succeed, then it gives them hope 16d0that maybe they can too.
Regretfully, the current crop of critics come from this same pool. Hence, the constant unjustified praise from a crowd unwilling to admit that the Emperor has no clothes. -

Giants used to roam the land of filmmaking, and it's true today simply can't compare to what it used to be.
I bought the La Dolce Vita criterion last week, and the linear notes stated that it was up for competition in the Cannes film fest the same year as L'Avventura Breathless, and The Virgin Spring. Also released that year was Peeping Tom, Psycho, Spartacus, among others.
Can today compare? Hell no. But maybe someday it will, and possibly guys like Aronofsky and PTA will be considered in the same league as Fellini and Bergman. Certainly, I think they've made some films that not only compare, but actually surpass some works of the greats.
Give them time, and give them their due. It's much harder these days to make a "Great Film", and they're doing their best, and often succeeding. -

How did Tarantino earn it?For Pulp Fiction?Because that's the only true masterpiece he ever made as a filmmaker.
I mean There will be Blood should put PTA in there and Nolan is already becoming a living legend, he's having a run of critical and commercial successes that few other directors have reached. -
