Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Roscoe Arbuckle

I have recently had the opportunity to view several Fatty Arbuckle comedies. It is true that he got a raw deal in the Virginia Rappe scandal, but I cannot say that he was a gifted actor. In every film I watched, all Fatty did was fall down, attempt to get back up, and fall down again. How many times do you watch a fat man fall down before it is no longer funny? Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd have nothing to fear - Arbuckle could not hold a candle to the three true comedy masterminds of the silent era. Fatty should have fell down and stayed down.

Arbuckle's films were gentle and straight to the point. He didn't do complicated things like Chaplin, Keaton or Lloyd.
And BTW, Arbuckle was the LEADING comedian until his fall from grace in 1921. He was bigger than Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton.

I know this is an old post but I agree. And he almost always gets the girl? Really? There's something loveable about being the underdog/downtrodden like Buster Keaton would play. I find Arbuckle quite boring but am glad I discover16d0ed what a gem Keaton was!
